Claims
- 1. A perfluorinated polyether having an average formula:
- XO(Y--O).sub.n (Y'--O).sub.m Z
- wherein Y is ##STR38## and Y' is selected from the group consisting of ##STR39## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.1 ', R.sub.2 ', R.sub.3 ', R.sub.4 ', R.sub.5 ', R.sub.6 ', R.sub.7 ' and R.sub.8 ', either separately or together, are F, perfluoroalkyl of one to twenty carbons or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbons; wherein R.sub.2 ' and R.sub.8 ' when, taken together, can be --CR.sub.9 R.sub.10 CR.sub.11 R.sub.12 --, wherein R.sub.9 through R.sub.12 are the same or different and are selected from the groups given for R.sub.1 ' to R.sub.8 '; wherein X and Z are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyls, perfluoroethers, perfluoropolyethers, fluoroalkyls terminated with fluoroacyl, carboxyl, amide or ester; methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters; wherein m is an integer from 0 to 10,00; and n is an integer from 5 to 10,000 with the proviso that each ether repeating unit contains at least one perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbon atoms.
- 2. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.3, --C.sub.2 F.sub.5, --C.sub.3 F.sub.7 and --C.sub.4 F.sub.9.
- 3. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3, wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12.
- 4. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters.
- 5. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', --CF.sub.2 CF(CF.sub.3)C(O)OR', --CF(CF.sub.3)CF.sub.2 C(O)OR' and --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', wherein R' is a hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon which contains one to ten carbon atoms and which may contain one or more ether oxygens and/or chlorine substituents.
- 6. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 10 to 10,000.
- 7. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 15 to 10,000.
- 8. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 25 to 10,000.
- 9. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 1 wherein m is an integer in the range of from about 1 to 100.
- 10. A lubricant comprising, a perfluorinated polyether base oil of claim 1, and optional additives and fillers to enhance the performance of the lubricant.
- 11. A perfluorinated polyether having the formula: ##STR40## wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyls, perfluoroethers, perfluoropolyethers, fluoroalkyls terminated with fluoroacyl, carboxyl, amide or ester; methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters; wherein n is an integer from 5 to 10,000; wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6, either separately or together, are F, perfluoroalkyl of one to twenty carbons or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbons, and with the proviso that each ether repeating unit contains at least one perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbon atoms.
- 12. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.3, --C.sub.2 F.sub.5, --C.sub.3 F.sub.7 and --C.sub.4 F.sub.9.
- 13. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3 wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12.
- 14. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of: methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters.
- 15. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', --CF.sub.2 CF(CF.sub.3)C(O)OR', --CF(CF.sub.3)CF.sub.2 C(O)OR' and --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', wherein R' is a hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon which contains one to ten carbon atoms and which may contain one or more ether oxygens and/or chlorine substituents.
- 16. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 10 to 10,000.
- 17. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 15 to 10,000.
- 18. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 11 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 25 to 10,000.
- 19. A perfluorinated polyether having an average formula:
- XO(Y--O).sub.n (Y'--O).sub.m Z
- wherein Y is ##STR41## and Y' is selected from the group consisting of ##STR42## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.1 ', R.sub.2 ', R.sub.3 ', R.sub.4 ', R.sub.5 ', R.sub.6 ', R.sub.7 ' and R.sub.8 ', either separately or together, are F, perfluoroalkyl of one to twenty carbons or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbons; wherein R.sub.2 and R.sub.8 when, taken together, can be --CR.sub.9 R.sub.10 CR.sub.11 R.sub.12 --, wherein R.sub.9 through R.sub.12 are the same or different and are selected from the groups given for R.sub.1 To R.sub.8 ; wherein X and Z are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12, perfluoroalkyl, perfluoroether and perfluoropolyether; wherein m is an integer from 0 to 10,000; and n is an integer from 5 to 10,000 with the proviso that each ether repeating unit contains at least one perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbon atoms.
- 20. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 19 wherein m is an integer in the range of from about 1 to 100.
- 21. A lubricant comprising a perhalogenated polyether base oil of claim 20, and optional additives and fillers to enhance the performance of the lubricant.
- 22. A perfluorinated polyether having an average formula: ##STR43## wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyls, perfluoroethers, perfluoropolyethers, fluoroalkyls terminated with fluoroacyl, carboxyl, amide or ester; methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters; wherein n is an integer from 5 to 10,000; and R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8, either separately or together, are F, perfluoroalkyl of one to twenty carbons or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbons with the proviso that each ether repeating unit contains at least one perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbon atoms.
- 23. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.3, --C.sub.2 F.sub.5, --C.sub.3 F.sub.7 and --C.sub.4 F.sub.9.
- 24. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3 wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12.
- 25. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of: methylols, acid chlorides, amides, amidines, acrylates and esters.
- 26. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of --CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', --CF.sub.2 CF(CF.sub.3)C(O)OR', --CF(CF.sub.3)CF.sub.2 C(O)OR' and --CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 C(O)OR', wherein R' is a hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon which contains one to ten carbon atoms and which may contain one or more ether oxygens and/or chlorine substituents.
- 27. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 10 to 10,000.
- 28. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 15 to 10,000.
- 29. The perfluorinated polyether of claim 22 wherein n is an integer in the range of from 25 to 10,000.
- 30. A perfluorinated polyether having an average formula: ##STR44## wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyl, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12; and wherein n is an integer between 5 and 10,000.
- 31. A perfluoropolyether having a linear chain structure consisting essentially of a total of at least five repeating units --YO-- and --Y'O--, wherein Y is CR.sub.1 R.sub.2 CR.sub.3 R.sub.4 CR.sub.5 R.sub.6 and Y' is selected from --CR.sub.1 'R.sub.2 'CR.sub.3 'R.sub.4 'CR.sub.5 'R.sub.6 '-- or --CR.sub.1 'R.sub.2 'CR.sub.3 'R.sub.4 'CR.sub.5 'R.sub.6 'CR.sub.7 'R.sub.8 '--, wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.1 ', R.sub.2 ', R.sub.3 ', R.sub.4 ', R.sub.5 ', R.sub.6 ', R.sub.7 ' and R.sub.8 ', in each repeating unit is F, perfluoroalkyl of one to twenty carbons or one perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbons, wherein the total number of ether repeating units is at least five with the proviso that each ether repeating unit contains at least one perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl ether of two to twenty carbon atoms.
- 32. The perfluoropolyether of claim 31 wherein the perfluoropolyether has at least ten ether repeating units.
- 33. The perfluoropolyether of claim 31 wherein the perfluoropolyether has at least fifteen ether repeating units.
- 34. A perfluorinated polyether having an average formula: ##STR45## wherein X and Z are selected from the group consisting of perfluoroalkyl, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r OCF.sub.3, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COF, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r COOH, --(CF.sub.2).sub.r C(O)OCH.sub.3, and --(CF.sub.2).sub.r CONH.sub.2, wherein r is an integer from 1 to 12; and wherein n is an integer between 1 and 10,000.
