Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming perforations in first sections of a continuous film along the length of said continuous film, said first sections alternating with second sections along said continuous film, said first sections having a variable length, said second sections having no perforations formed therein, said apparatus comprising:
- a series of die sets arranged along a feeding path of said continuous film, each of said series of die sets having a plurality of punches and dies arranged along said feeding path, each of said die sets being independently actuable;
- a designating device for designating the length of said first sections;
- a film feeding means for feeding said continuous film;
- an selectively actuating said die sets; and
- a main controller for controlling said film feeder to feed said film by a given length, over at least one feeding step, said given length being a sum of the length of one of said first sections, and a length of a corresponding one of said second sections,
- said main controller also being for controlling said actuating device for actuating at least one of said die sets after said at least one feeding step, to form said perforations in said first section having the designated length.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said film feeding means is provided with first and second feeding modes, one of which is selected depending upon the designated length of each of said first sections, said film feeding means feeding said continuous film by said given length over a period of time in said first feeding mode, or by first and second feeding lengths through first and second feeding steps in said second feeding mode;
- said series of die sets include at least first and second die sets, said first die set being capable of making a first number of said perforations through a first perforating length, said second die set being capable of making a second number of said perforations through a second perforating length; and
- said designating device designates one of first, second and third predetermined film types, so that: when said first type is designated, only said first die set is actuated after said continuous film is fed by said feeding means in said first feeding mode; when said second type is designated, both of said first and second die sets are actuated after said continuous film is fed by said feeding means in said first feeding mode; and when said third type is designated, both of said first and second die sets are actuated following said first feeding step of said second feeding mode, and then only said second die set is actuated following said second feeding step of said second feeding mode.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein said feeding means includes a motor connected to a process controller, wherein said process controller is programmed to operate said motor at a higher voltage during said first feeding step than during said second feeding step.
- 4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein said process controller is programmed to operate said motor for the same amount of time during said first feeding step as during said second feeding step.
- 5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein said feeding means includes a motor connected to a process controller, wherein said process controller is programmed to operate said motor for a longer amount of time during said first feeding step than during said second feeding step.
- 6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein said process controller is programmed to operate said motor at the same voltage during said first feeding step and said second feeding step.
- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said film feeding means includes a variable speed motor connected to a process controller which receives a signal output by said designating device, wherein said signal is representative of a length of said first sections.
- 8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said second feeding length is shorter than said first feeding length.
- 9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said second number of perforations is smaller than said first number of perforations.
- 10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said second perforating length is shorter than or equal to said first perforating length.
- 11. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first perforating length is equal to said designated length.
- 12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said designated length of said first sections is equal to said first perforating length plus said second perforating length.
- 13. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said designated length of said first sections is equal to said first perforating length plus twice said second perforating length.
