Claims
- 1. A process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma of a consumable material selected from the group consisting of perfume compositions, colognes and perfumed articles comprising the step of adding to said consumable material an aroma augmenting or enhancing quantity of a product produced according to the process comprising the steps of (i) admixing at a temperature in the range of 150.degree.-250.degree. C. an acrolein derivative having the structure: ##STR153## with a bicyclopentadiene derivative having the structure: ##STR154## whereby the reaction: ##STR155## takes place wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.1 ', R.sub.1 ", R.sub.1 '", R.sub.1"", R.sub.3, R.sub.5, R.sub.5 ', R.sub.5 ", R.sub.5 '", R.sub.5 "" and R.sub.6 represent hydrogen or methyl with the provisos:
- (i) at least four of R.sub.1, R.sub.1 ', R.sub.1 ", R.sub.1'", R.sub.1 "" represent hydrogen; and
- (ii) at least four of R.sub.5, R.sub.5 ', R.sub.5", R.sub.5'", R.sub.5 "" represent hydrogen;
- and then (ii) fractionally distilling the resulting product whereby a mixture is produced capable of augmenting or enhancing the aroma of said consumable material.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein in the process of reacting the acrolein derivative with the bicyclopentadiene derivative, the process reaction is: ##STR156## and the reaction is carried out in the presence of a toluene solvent and the reaction product is recovered at a vapor temperature in the range of from 83.degree. C. up to 86.degree. C.; a liquid temperature of from 130.degree. C. up to 170.degree. C.; and a pressure of 2 mm/Hg.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein in the process of reacting the acrolein derivative with the bicyclopentadiene derivative, the process reaction is: ##STR157## and the reaction takes place in toluene and the reaction product is distilled at 92.degree.-96.sqroot. C. vapor temperature and 126.degree.-140.degree. C. liquid temperature at a pressure of 1.0 mm/Hg pressure.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein in the process of reacting the acrolein with the bicyclopentadiene derivative, the process reaction is: ##STR158## and the reaction is carried out in toluene, and the reaction product is recovered at a vapor temperature of from 83.degree. C. to 86.degree. C.; a liquid temperature of 135.degree. C. up to 137.degree. C.; and a pressure of 2 mm/Hg.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfume composition.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a cologne.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfumed article and the perfumed article is a solid or liquid anionic, cationic, nonionic or zwitterionic detergent.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfumed article and the perfumed article is a perfumed polymer.
