Claims
- 1. Unfired periclase refractory brick having a green strength of above 30 p.s.i. made from a dry brick batch containing 2.5 to 4.5% of an alkyd resin and 0.1 to 1.5% of an organic or inorganic acid, both based on the weight of the dry batch, the acid giving the brick a green strength of above 30 p.s.i.
- 2. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is an organic acid.
- 3. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is an inorganic acid.
- 4. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is phosphoric acid.
- 5. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of toluene sulfonic acid, xylene sulfonic acid, mixtures thereof, salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid.
- 6. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is sulfuric acid.
- 7. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the acid is hydrochloric acid.
- 8. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the alkyd resin has an alkyd number in the range of about 15 to 40.
- 9. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the alkyd resin is an oil-modified alkyd resin.
- 10. The unfired periclase refractory brick of claim 1 wherein the alkyd resin is an oil-modified phthalic anhydride-glycerol alkyd resin.
- 11. An improved binder system for the production of periclase refractories, the binder system consisting essentially of an alkyd resin and from about 5 to about 35% by weight of the weight of the alkyd resin of an organic or inorganic acid which gives green brick having a transverse strength in excess of 30 p.s.i., said acid selected from the group consisting of toluene sulfonic acid, xylene sulfonic acid, mixtures thereof, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid, sulfonic acid and hydrochloric acid.
- 12. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the organic acid is selected from the group of toluene sulfonic acid, xylo sulphonic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The binder system of claim 11 including an organic solvent for the alkyd resin, the solvent comprising up to about 30% by weight of the combined weight of solvent and alkyd resin.
- 14. The binder system of claim 13 wherein the solvent comprises about 20 to 30% of the combined weight of solvent and alkyd resin.
- 15. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the acid comprises from about 10 to 20% by weight of the resin.
- 16. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the acid is sulfuric acid.
- 17. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the acid is hydrochloric acid.
- 18. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the alkyd resin has an alkyd number in the range of about 15 to 40.
- 19. The binder system of claim 11 wherein the alkyd resin is an oil-modified alkyd resin.
- 20. The binder system of claim 19 wherein the alkyd resin is an oil-modified phthalic anhydride-glycerol alkyd resin.
