Claims
- 1. An iron-type golf club head having a club face, a back surface, said club head comprising a heel, a toe, and a sole extending generally between said heel and said toe, an upper edge portion, a weighted perimeter portion which forms at least a portion of the perimeter of said club head, and at least one metal portion on the back surface of said club head that is oriented generally perpendicular to the upper edge portion of said club head and said at least one metal portion extends from an upper portion of said club head toward at least part of the weighted perimeter portion at the upper portion of the club head, wherein said club head comprises at least two channel portions on the back surface of said club head that are disposed at least along the upper portion of said club head, wherein said channel portions are located on either side of said metal portion, wherein said channel portions each have a length oriented in the same general direction as the upper edge portion of said club head, and a width, wherein the length of at least one of said channel portions is more than twice the width of said at least one channel portion, and said channel portions lie above the area of said club face where a golf ball is predominately hit.
- 2. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said at least one metal portion comprises a reinforcing member.
- 3. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said at least one metal portion comprises a rib.
- 4. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said channel portions are elongated.
- 5. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said channel portions have sides that are disposed along the length of said channel portions, and the sides of said channel portions are generally parallel to each other.
- 6. The golf club head of claim 5 wherein the sides of at least one of said channel portions are curvilinear.
- 7. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said channel portions have a width of about ⅛ inch.
- 8. The golf club head of claim 1 wherein said channel portions comprise thinned regions of said club face.
- 9. The golf club head of claim 8 wherein said club face has a center of percussion, and said club face exclusive of any grooves therein defines a plane, wherein said club face has a thickness measured in the region of its center of percussion, and a thickness that is measured in at least a portion of at least one of said channel portions that is less than that of the club face at the center of percussion, both thicknesses being measured from the plane of the club face to the back surface of the club head.
- 10. A golf club comprising the golf club head of claim 1.
- 11. An iron-type golf club head having a club face, a back surface, said club head comprising a heel, a toe, and a sole extending generally between said heel and said toe, an upper edge portion that is oriented in a direction, an upper portion that includes said upper edge portion, a weighted perimeter portion which forms at least a portion of the perimeter of said club head, a recess on the back surface of said club head that is disposed in at least a portion of the upper portion of said club head, said recess having a length and a width, wherein the length of at least a portion of said recess is disposed in a similar orientation as the upper edge portion of said club head, wherein at least some portion of the back surface of said club head comprises at least three spaced apart reinforcing members that are located on the upper portion of said club head, wherein at least one of said reinforcing members is oriented generally perpendicular to said upper edge portion, and said recess and reinforcing members lie above the area of said club face where a golf ball is predominately hit.
- 12. A golf club comprising the golf club head of claim 11.
- 13. The golf club of claim 12 wherein said recess comprises at least two channel portions that are spaced apart by at least one of said reinforcing members.
- 14. The golf club of claim 13 wherein there are three channel portions that are oriented generally parallel to the upper edge portion of said club head.
- 15. The golf club of claim 13 wherein said channel portions are elongated and at least some of said channel portions have sides that are generally rectilinear.
- 16. The golf club of claim 13 wherein the sides of each of said channel portions are generally parallel to each other.
- 17. The golf club of claim 13 wherein said club head comprises at least one additional channel portion on the back surface of said club head that has curvilinear sides.
- 18. The golf club of claim 13 wherein said channel portions have a length and a width, and said reinforcing members have a length, and the length of said channel portions is greater than the length of at least one of said reinforcing members.
- 19. The golf club of claim 12 wherein said recess has a width of about ⅛ inch.
- 20. The golf club of claim 12 wherein said club face has a center of percussion, and said club face exclusive of any grooves therein defires a plane, wherein said club face has a thickness measured in the region of its center of percussion, and a thickness that is measured in at least a portion of said recess that is less than that of the club face at the center of percussion, both thicknesses being measured from the plane of the club face to the back surface of the club head.
- 21. The golf club of claim 13 wherein said channel portions are oriented in an end-to-end configuration with at least one of said reinforcing members therebetween.
- 22. An iron-type golf club comprising a golf club head having a club face, a back surface, said club head comprising a heel, a toe, and a sole extending generally between said heel and said toe, an upper edge portion, a weighted perimeter portion which forms at least a portion of the perimeter of said club head, at least three spaced apart reinforcing members on the back surface of said club head that extend from an upper portion of said club head toward at least part of the weighted perimeter portion at the upper portion of the club head, and at least four elongated channel portions on the back surface of said club head, wherein said channel portions have a length and a width, wherein the length of at least one of said channel portions is more than twice the width of said at least one channel portion, and the width of said channel portions is about ⅛ inch, said channel portions being oriented so that the lengths of said channel portions extend in the same general direction as the upper edge portion of said club head and said channel portions are oriented in an end-to-end configuration with at least one of said reinforcing members therebetween, and wherein said channel portions lie above the area of said club face where a golf ball is predominately hit.
- 23. An iron-type golf club comprising a golf club head having a club face, a back surface, said club head comprising a heel, a toe, and a sole extending generally between said heel and said toe, an upper edge portion, a weighted perimeter portion which forms at least a portion of the perimeter of said club head, at least three spaced apart reinforcing members on the back surface of said club head that extend from an upper portion of said club head toward at least part of the weighted perimeter portion at the upper portion of the club head, and at least four elongated channel portions on the back surface of said club head that are oriented generally parallel to the upper edge portion of said club head, wherein said channel portions have a length and a width, wherein the length of at least one of said channel portions is more than twice the width of said at least one channel portion, and the width of said channel portions is about ⅛ inch, said channel portions being oriented so that the lengths of said channel portions extend in the same general direction as the upper edge portion of said club head, and the said reinforcing members have a length and a width, wherein the length of said reinforcing members is generally oriented perpendicular to the upper edge portion of said club head, and the length of said channel portions is greater than the length of at least one of said reinforcing members, and said channel portions are oriented in an end-to-end configuration with at least one of said reinforcing members therebetween, wherein said channel portions lie above the area of said club face where a golf ball is predominately hit, and wherein one of said channel portions is disposed near the toe of said club head, and said channel portion disposed near the toe of said club head has curvilinear sides that are oriented generally parallel to each other.
- 24. The golf club of claim 23 wherein said channel portions comprise thinned regions of the back surface of said club head.
- 25. The golf club of claim 23 wherein said club face has a center of percussion, and said club face exclusive of any grooves therein defines a plane, wherein said club face has a thickness measured in the region of its center of percussion, and a thickness that is measured in at least a portion of at least one of said channel portions that is less than that of the club face at the center of percussion, both thicknesses being measured from the plane of the club face to the back surface of the club head.
- 26. The golf club of claim 23 further comprising a piece of elastomeric material on the back surface of said club head.
- 27. A method of designing an iron-type golf club head, said method comprising:
taking a weighted perimeter iron-type golf club head design having a club face, a back surface, said club head comprising a heel, a toe, and a sole extending generally between said heel and said toe, an upper edge portion, a weighted perimeter portion which forms at least a portion of the perimeter of said club head; and altering said weighted perimeter iron-type golf club head design to increase the efficiency of the perimeter weighting by removing weight from at least four elongated channel portions that lie above the area of said club face where a golf ball is predominately hit, wherein said channel portions have a length and a width, wherein the length of at least one of said channel portions is more than twice the width of said at least one channel portion, and the width of said channel portions is about ⅛ inch, and said channel portions are oriented so that the lengths of said channel portions extend in the same general direction as the upper edge portion of said club head and said channel portions are oriented in an end-to-end configuration with reinforcing material therebetween; and moving said weight to the weighted perimeter portion of said club head.
