Claims
- 1. A peritoneal fluid treatment kit comprised of:
- a first openable package having a bottom and a top which are substantially of similar shape and dimension sealed to each other about their perimeters to form an interior having a volume sized to receive contents, said top being made of transparent material to permit viewing of the contents which are for peritoneal fluid treatment and which are positioned within said interior of said package, said contents including:
- an intravascular catheter apparatus which includes a first cannula and placement means for inserting a portion of said first cannula into the peritoneal cavity of a patient,
- a flexible guide means for insertion into the peritoneal cavity through said first cannula after removal of said placement means, said guide means being sized in cross-section to fit within said first cannula and in length to be substantially longer than said first cannula,
- a second cannula which is flexible for insertion into the peritoneal cavity over said guide means after removal of said first cannula, said second cannula being sized in length to be substantially longer than said first cannula and in cross-section sufficient to allow said guide means to pass there through and having a first end to pass into the peritoneal cavity and a second end to which connector means are adapted for connection to parenteral fluid operation means; and
- wherein said intravascular catheter, said flexible guide means and said second cannula are objects each positioned within the interior of said first package and each contained within their own separate openable package each of which has a bottom and a top which are of similar shape and dimension and sealed to each other about their perimeters to form an interior having a volume sized to receive its respective object therewithin, said top being made of transparent material to permit viewing of the respective objects and which is oriented within said first openable package for viewing through the top of said first openable package.
- 2. The kit of claim 1 wherein said contents further includes:
- skin preparation means to clean and sterilize a portion of the skin of the body in preparation for the penetration thereof by medical apparatus;
- local anesthetic means to locally anesthetize in the area of penetration by said intravascular catheter prior to said penetration;
- incision means for making an incision through the skin of the patient through which said intravascular catheter is inserted;
- suture means for securing said second cannula in place, said suture means having a suture which is stitched in the skin proximate said incision and secured to said second cannula subsequent to the placement of said second cannula in position in the peritoneal cavity; and
- a body drape for positioning over the body of said patient proximate said incision;
- wherein said skin preparation means, local anesthetic means, incision means, suture means and body drape are objects each positioned within the interior of said first package and contained within their own separate openable package each of which has a top and a bottom which are of similar shape and dimension and sealed to each other about their perimeters to form an interior having a volume sized to receive its respective object therewithin, said top being transparent to permit viewing of the respective objects and which is oriented within said first openable package for viewing through the top of said first openable package.
- 3. The kit of claim 2 wherein the bottom of said first openable package is separable into a first portion and a second portion and wherein the top of said first openable package is formed into a first top portion and a second top portion each dimensioned and shaped to the shape and dimension of the first and second portions of the bottom, respectively, and sealed thereto about their respective perimeters to form first and second package parts each having a volume to receive contents, and wherein the contents of said first package part includes said flexible guide means, said second cannula and said intravascular catheter each within its own separate packages, and wherein the contents of said second package part includes said skin preparation means, said incision means, said local anesthetic means, said body drape and said incision means each within its own separate package.
- 4. The kit of claim 3 wherein said local anesthetic means includes a syringe with needle and a liquid local anesthetic in a container which is positioned within the second package part of said first openable package exterior of the separate openable package of said local anesthetic means, wherein said incision means is a small surgical knife, wherein said suture means is comprised of a suture and suture needle, and wherein said skin preparation means is comprised of an antiseptic skin preparation solution impregnated in sponges.
- 5. The kit of claim 4 wherein said intravascular catheter is comprised of said first cannula connected to a hub and a stylet having handle means affixed at its first end and a sharp point at its second end, said stylet being removably positioned within said cannula so that said sharp point extends slightly beyond said cannula at the end of said cannula opposite said hub, wherein said guide means is a spring-wound-type wire made of a refractory metal and is from about 20 to about 50 centimeters in length and from about 0.5 millimeters to about 2 millimeters in diameter, and wherein said second cannula has a second end for insertion into the peritoneal cavity which is tapered and sized in cross-section to fit slideably and snuggly about said guide means.
- 6. The kit of claim 3 wherein said first and second portions of said bottom and in turn said first and second package parts are separable from each other along a perforation formed in said bottom of said first package.
