Claims
- 1. A magnetic coupler comprising:
- two shafts;
- a group of two axially-spaced magnet rotors each containing a respective set of permanent magnets; and
- a group of two axially-spaced conductor rotors each having a nonferrous electroconductive ring spaced by an air gap from a respective one of said sets of magnets;
- the distance between the rotors of one of said groups being fixed, and such group being mounted on one of said shafts to rotate therewith; and
- the rotors of the other one of said groups being interconnected and arranged to be moveable axially and simultaneously along the other one of said shafts and to rotate together with said shaft such that the width of said air gaps are equally varied by such axial movement.
- 2. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which interconnecting elements extend between said axially moveable rotors for determining the amount of axial movement of such rotors relative to one another responsive to magnetic action between said magnets and said conductor rotors.
- 3. A magnetic coupler according to claim 2 in which said elements comprise compression springs extending between the axially moveable rotors.
- 4. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which said magnet rotors are the rotors which are axially moveable relative to one another.
- 5. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which said electroconductive rings are backed with ferrous material.
- 6. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which elements bias said axially moveable rotors toward said other rotors in opposition to repulsion forces developed between said magnets and said conductor rotors responsive to relative rotational movement between said axially moveable rotors and said other rotors.
- 7. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which said other one of said shafts has a splined section cooperating with said axially moveable rotors.
- 8. A magnetic coupler according to claim 1 in which said shafts are coaxial.
- 9. A magnetic coupler comprising:
- two coaxial shafts;
- a group of two axially spaced non-ferrous discs each containing a respective set of permanent magnets arranged in a circle with adjacent magnets having their poles reversed simultaneously;
- a group of two axially-spaced discs each presenting a circular non-ferrous electroconductive element spaced by an air gap from a respective one of said sets of magnets, said air gaps normally being equal in width;
- the distance between the discs of one of said groups being fixed, and such group being mounted on one of said shafts to rotate therewith;
- the discs of the other of said groups being interconnected and mounted to be moveable axially and simultaneously along the other of said shafts and to rotate together with such shaft such that the width of said air gaps are varied equally by such axial movement.
- 10. A magnetic coupler according to claim 9 in which the interconnection between the discs of said other of the groups includes springs.
