Claims
- 1. A personal care composition, comprising:
- (A) from about 0.25 to about 15 parts by weight per 100 parts carrier medium of a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer having a melting point of from about -40.degree. C. to about +40.degree. C. and being selected from:
- (1) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer fluid comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2, and
- (c) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.004:1 to about 0.5:1, and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 19:1 to about 3:7;
- (2) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer fluid comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2, and
- (c) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.004:1 to about 0.5:1, and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 9:1 to about 1:19;
- (3) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer fluid comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2, and
- (c) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.004:1 to about 0.5:1, and the molar ratio of RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 9:1 to about 1:19;
- (4) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer fluid comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2,
- (c) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2, and
- (d) difunctional units having the general formula RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units, RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units, and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.004:1 to about 0.5:1, the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 19:1 to about 30:70; and the molar ratio of RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units to the sum of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 1:9 to about 19:1;
- (5) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer resin comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2, and
- (c) tetrafunctional units having the formula SiO.sub.4/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 3:2;
- (6) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer resin comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2, and
- (c) tetrafunctional units having the formula SiO.sub.4/2,
- wherein the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 3:2;
- (7) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer resin comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2, and
- (c) tetrafunctional units having the formula SiO.sub.4/2 ;
- wherein the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 3:2; or
- (8) a polyalkylsiloxane copolymer resin comprising:
- (a) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (b) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2,
- (c) monofunctional units having the general formula R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2, and
- (d) tetrafunctional units having the formula SiO.sub.4/2 ;
- wherein the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units, R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 3:2; wherein "a" is a number from 0 to 3, "b" is a number from 0 to 3, "a"+"b" is equal to 3, "c" is a number from 0 to 2, "d" is a number from 1 to 3, "c"+"d" is equal to 3, each R is independently an alkyl radical having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical, or a phenethyl radical; each R.sup.1 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 15 to about 36 carbon atoms: each R.sup.2 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 6 to about 14 carbon atoms; and each R.sup.3 is independently a branched alkyl radical having from about 5 to about 36 carbon atoms, the weighted average of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 in the copolymer being sufficient to provide an average of from about 14 to about 30 carbon atoms in the sum of R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 +R.sup.3 ; and
- (B) a cosmetically acceptable carrier medium.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein each R is methyl, each R.sup.1 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 16 to about 24 carbon atoms, each R.sup.2 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 8 to about 14 carbon atoms, and each R.sup.3 is independently a branched alkyl radical having from about 12 to about 30 carbon atoms.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein each R.sup.1 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms, each R.sup.2 is independently a linear alkyl radical having from about 10 to about 14 carbon atoms, and each R.sup.3 is independently a branched alkyl radical having from about 16 to about 28 carbon atoms.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the weighted average of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 is sufficient to provide an average of from about 14 to about 26 carbon atoms in the sum of R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 +R.sup.3.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4 wherein the weighted average of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 is sufficient to provide an average of from about 14 to about 24 carbon atoms in the sum of R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 +R.sup.3.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(1) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.2:1 to about 0.01:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 9:1 to about 1:1.
- 7. A composition according to claim 6 wherein in (A)(1) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.1:1 to about 0.02:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 1.5:1.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(2) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.2:1 to about 0.01:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 85:15 to about 15:85.
- 9. A composition according to claim 8 wherein in (A)(2) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.1:1 to about 0.02:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 1:4.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(3) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.2:1 to about 0.01:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 15:85 to about 85:15.
- 11. A composition according to claim 10 wherein in (A)(3) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.1:1 to about 0.02:1 and the molar ratio of RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 1:4.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(4) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units, RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units, and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.2:1 to about 0.01:1, the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 9:1 to about 1:1, and the molar ratio of RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units to the sum of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 15:85 to about 85:15.
- 13. A composition according to claim 12 wherein in (A)(4) the molar ratio of R.sub.a R.sub.b.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units to the sum of the RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units, RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units, and RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 0.1:1 to about 0.02:1, the molar ratio of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units to RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 4:1 to about 1.5:1, and the molar ratio of RR.sup.3 SiO.sub.2/2 units to the sum of RR.sup.1 SiO.sub.2/2 units and RR.sup.2 SiO.sub.2/2 units is from about 1:4 to about 4:1.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(5) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 77:23 to about 62:38.
- 15. A composition according to claim 14 wherein in (A)(5) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 75:25 to about 65:35.
- 16. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(6) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 77:23 to about 62:38.
- 17. A composition according to claim 16 wherein in (A)(6) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 75:25 to about 65:35.
- 18. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(7) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 77:23 to about 62:38.
- 19. A composition according to claim 18 wherein in (A)(7) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 75:25 to about 65:35.
- 20. A composition according to claim 1 wherein in (A)(8) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units, R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 77:23 to about 62:38.
- 21. A composition according to claim 20 wherein in (A)(8) the molar ratio of the sum of R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.1 SiO.sub.1/2 units, R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.2 SiO.sub.1/2 units and R.sub.c R.sub.d.sup.3 SiO.sub.1/2 units to SiO.sub.4/2 units is from about 75:25 to about 65:35.
- 22. A composition according to claim 1 wherein "a" is 3, "b" is 0, "c" is 2, and "d" is 1.
- 23. A composition according to claim 1 wherein copolymer (A) further comprises from about 0.5 to about 50 mol % of trifunctional units selected from (i) RSiO.sub.3/2 units, (ii) R.sup.1 SiO.sub.3/2 units, (iii) R.sup.2 SiO.sub.3/2, (iv) R.sup.3 SiO.sub.3/2, or (v) a mixture of two or more of the foregoing.
- 24. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the copolymer has a melting point of from about -30.degree. C. to about +35.degree. C.
- 25. A composition according to claim 24 wherein the copolymer has a melting point of from about -20.degree. C. to about +30.degree. C.
- 26. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the copolymer has a melting point of from about 20.degree. C. to about 35.degree. C.
- 27. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the copolymer has a melting point of from about -30.degree. C. to about +25.degree. C.
