Claims
- 1. A system for printing postage on an item of mail, comprising:a personal computer having a processing unit which runs an application program for computing postage and/or private carrier rate information, said application program computing postage based on information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; a slot located along a surface of a housing of said personal computer; a printer included within said housing at a location adjacent said slot, said printer printing onto said item of mail a mark indicative of said rate information computed by said application program; and an electronic scale for weighing an item of mail.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said personal computer is a portable personal computer.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein said electronic scale is a removable scale cartridge inserted into said personal computer.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein said removable scale cartridge includes:a platform for supporting an item; a weighing unit which outputs a weight signal corresponding to a weight of said item supported on the platform; and an electrical connector part which is adapted for coupling with a complementary connector part in said personal computer, said electrical connector part including one of a plug and a receptacle and said complementary connector part including the other of said plug and receptacle, wherein when said plug is inserted into said receptacle said weighing unit outputs the weight signal to said personal computer.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein said slot has a depth which defines a maximum printing range of said printer relative to a print medium inserted into said slot.
- 6. A system for printing postage on an item of mail, comprising:a personal computer having a processing unit which runs an application program for computing postage and/or private carrier rate information, said application program computing postage based on information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; a slot located along a surface of a housing of said personal computer; a printer included within said housing at a location adjacent said slot, said printer printing onto said item of mail a mark indicative of said rate information computed by said application program, wherein said slot is located along a surface of a housing of said personal computer, said slot defining a transport path which extends in a direction parallel to said surface.
- 7. A method for printing postage on an item of mail, comprising:obtaining a personal computer having a housing which includes a printer and a slot formed along a surface of said housing at a postion adjacent said printer, weighing an item of mail on an electronic scale to generate weight information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; computing postage or private carrier rate information based on said weight information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; inserting said item of mail into said slot; and printing a mark indicative of said postage or private carrier rate information on said item of mail.
- 8. A method for printing postage on an item of mail, comprising:obtaining a personal computer having a housing which includes a printer and a slot formed along a surface of said housing at a postion adjacent said printer, computing postage or private carrier rate information based on weight information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; inserting said item of mail into said slot; and printing a mark indicative of said postage or private carrier rate information on said item of mail, wherein said slot defines a transport path which extends in a direction parallel to the surface of said housing into which said slot is formed.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein said inserting step includes:sliding the item of mail by hand through the transport path formed by said slot.
- 10. The method of claim 8, further comprising:automatically moving the item of mail through the transport path; detecting when the item of mail has reached a printing position within said slot; and printing said mark.
- 11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:sensing when the item of mail has reached a printing position within said transport path; and printing said mark on the item of mail based on said sensing step.
- 12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:forming a stop in said transport path for orienting the item of mail at a printing position when the item of mail is inserted into said transport path.
- 13. The method of claim 7, wherein said computing step is performed by an application program running on said personal computer, said application program computing said postage or private carrier rate based on said weight of the item of mail.
- 14. The method of claim 7, wherein said electronic scale is a removable scale cartridge inserted into said personal computer.
- 15. The method of claim 7, wherein said printing step includes printing said mark at a position on said item of mail that is delimited by a depth of said slot.
- 16. A system for printing information on an item of mail, comprising:a portable personal computer having a processing unit which runs an application program for either computing postage and/or private carrier rate information or generating address information, advertising information, or class-of-mail information; a slot located along a surface of said housing of said personal computer, said slot defining a transport path which extends in a direction parallel to said surface; and a printer included within said housing at a location adjacent said slot, said printer printing one of said rate information, said address information, said advertising information, said class-of-mail information on said item of mail inserted into said slot.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein said slot has a depth which defines a maximum printing range of said printer relative to a print medium inserted into said slot.
- 18. The system of claim 16, further comprising:a scale for weighing an item of mail.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein said scale is a removable scale cartridge adapted for insertion into said slot and for conveying weight signals to the application program in said personal computer to be used in computing said rate information.
- 20. A method for printing information on an item of mail, comprising:obtaining a personal computer having a housing which includes a printer and a slot formed along a surface of said housing at a postion adjacent said printer, computing postage or private carrier rate information based on weight information indicative of a weight of said item of mail; inserting said item of mail into said slot; and printing a mark indicative of said postage or private carrier rate information on said item of mail, wherein said slot defines a transport path which extends in a direction parallel to the surface of said housing into which said slot is formed.
