Claims
- 1. A surgical instrument for removing a cataract through an incision in an eye, comprising:
- irrigation means for providing a liquid;
- aspiration means for aspirating the liquid;
- a handpiece;
- an infusion sleeve connected to said handpiece, said sleeve having a distal end and a proximal end, said sleeve including at least one infusion port for infusing a liquid from said irrigation means, said sleeve having means for directing the infused liquid through the at least one infusion port, wherein said directing means includes at least one projection disposed on at least one of an internal and external surface of said sleeve adjacent to said at least one infusion port, said at least one projection extends beyond the remaining surface surrounding said at least one infusion port on said at least one of said internal and external surfaces; and
- a needle disposed within said sleeve and connected to said aspiration means, said needle having a distal end comprising a tip.
- 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1, further comprising a silicone membrane disposed radially outside of said needle which defines an annular reservoir chamber disposed between said silicone membrane and said needle.
- 3. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said at least one infusion port is in the shape of one of a circle, oval and ellipse.
- 4. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said aspiration tube includes a valve to regulate aspiration.
- 5. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said aspiration tube is a variable aperture aspiration tube.
- 6. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said at least one aspiration port is in the shape of one of a circle, oval and ellipse.
- 7. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said directing means comprises at least one of at least one barrier, annular ramp, step, angled surface, bar, baffle, wedge and extension disposed on one of an internal and an external surface of said sleeve.
- 8. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said directing means directs the infused liquid in a predetermined direction with respect to said at least one infusion port.
- 9. The surgical instrument of claim 8, wherein said predetermined direction is directed away from said tip.
- 10. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said at least one projection is disposed on an internal surface of said sleeve.
- 11. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said at least one projection is disposed on an external surface of said sleeve.
- 12. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said at least one projection is disposed on an internal and external surface of said sleeve.
