Claims
- 1. A surgical instrument for removing a cataract through an incision in an eye, comprising:
- irrigation means;
- aspiration means;
- a handpiece shell;
- an infusion sleeve connected to said handpiece shell and connected to said irrigation means, said sleeve having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a needle disposed within said sleeve and connected to said aspiration means; and
- an elastic membrane disposed radially within at least one of said handpiece shell and at least a portion of said sleeve and radially outside of said needle to define an annular variable volume reservoir chamber disposed between said membrane and said needle to account for a surge of flow in said aspiration means.
- 2. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said handpiece includes an air vent provided radially outside of said silicone membrane to permit said membrane to collapse freely.
- 3. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said membrane is disposed axially adjacent to said sleeve.
- 4. The surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said membrane is made of silicone.
