Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical composition for treating alcoholism or moderating the effects of taking alcohol, comprising .gamma.-linolenic acid and/or dihomo-.gamma.-linolenic acid, as such or as a physiologically functional ester or other derivative thereof, in combination with ethyl alcohol, said composition being presented for administration in doses comprising 50 mg to 10 g of said .gamma.-linolenic acid or dihomo-.gamma.-linolenic acid or derivative (calculated as .gamma.-linolenic acid) together with 5 to 500 ml of ethyl alcohol or one-half, one-third or one-quarter of said amounts.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 comprising a further material influencing the 1-series/2-series PG balance in the body in favor of 1-series PGs by enhancing conversion of DGLA ester stores to free DGLA.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 comprising further a physiologically assimilable zinc compound, or penicillamine, phenformin or levamisole, or a penicillin, cephalosporin or other .gamma.-lactam antibiotic.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 in dosage unit form comprising:
- ______________________________________Said zinc compound 2.5 to 800 mg/day calculated zinc, or.beta.-lactam antibiotics 0.5 to 10 g/day, orPenicillamine 50 mg to 10 g/day, orPhenformin 10 mg to 5 g/day, orLevamisole 10 mg to 2 g/day.______________________________________
- 5. A composition according to claim 1, comprising a further material influencing the 1-series/2-series PG balance in the body of favor of 1-series PGs by enhancing the physiological production or effect of TXA2.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 comprising further colchicine, amantadine, melatonin, griseofulvin, vinblastine, vincristine, or interferon.
- 7. A composition according to claim 6 in dosage unit form comprising:
- ______________________________________Colchicine 0.3 to 15 mg/day, orMelatonin 10 mg to 5 g/day, orAmantadine 100 mg to 1000 mg/day, orGriseofulvin 0.5 to 5 g/day, orVinblastine 0.5 to 5 mg/kg/week, orVincristine 0.1 to 1.0 mg/kg/week, orInterferon 1 .times. 10.sup.5 to 1 .times. 10.sup.8______________________________________ units/day.
- 8. A method of treating alcoholism is moderating the effects of taking alcohol which comprises administering an effective amount of .gamma.-linolenic acid and/or dihomo-.gamma.-linolenic acid, as such or as physiologically functional ester or other derivative thereof, in the form of a composition according to claim 1.
