Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a major amount of a liquid hydrocarbyl fuel normally susceptible to oxidation and a minor antioxidant amount of an additive product prepared by (a) reacting a preformed Mannich base derived from a phenol, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl aldehyde and a low boiling amine, and (b) a reactive compound having at least one reactive hydrogen selected from reactive hydrocarbyl amines, said phenol having the following generalized structural formula: ##STR6## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and are hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl or tertiary alkyl and R.sup.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 to about C.sub.30 hydrocarbyl, said reaction being carried out with an equivalent amount of Mannich base to amine at temperatures varying from about 25.degree. to about 250.degree. C., said reactive compound having a higher boiling point than said low boiling amine.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said low boiling amine is selected from the group consisting of a dimethyl amine, diethyl amine, di-n-butyl amine, methyl butyl amine, diisobutylamine and diisopropanolamine.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said reactive amine is selected from aniline, N-methyl aniline, dodecyl aniline, 4,4'-methylene dianiline, hydrazine, N-phenyl-naphthylamine, 4,4'-bis(sec-butylamino) diphenyl methane, 4,4'-bis(sec-butylamino) diphenyl amine, benzotriazole and tolyltriazole.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the phenol is a non-hindered phenol.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the phenol is a hindered phenol.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the aldehyde is formaldehyde.
- 7. A method of providing multipurpose antioxidant characteristics to a liquid hydrocarbyl fuel comprising adding to said fuel a minor amount of an additive made by reacting a preformed Mannich base with a compound selected from reactive hydrocarbyl amines having at least one reactive hydrogen, said reaction being carried out with an equivalent amount of Mannich base, or with a molar ratio varying from 1 to 1 to about 2 to 1 of Mannich base to hydrocarbyl amine at temperatures varying from about 25.degree. to about 250.degree. C. said Mannich base having been prepared from (1) a phenol, (2) a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl aldehyde and (3) an amine having a lower boiling point than that of said reactive amine, said phenol having the following generalized structural formula: ##STR7## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and are hydrogen to C.sub.1 to about C.sub.18 alkyl or tertiary alkyl and R.sup.4 is H or C.sub.1 or about C.sub.30 hydrocarbyl.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said additive is added to said fuel composition in an amount from about 0.1 to about 50 lbs. of additive per 1000 bbl of fuel.
