Claims
- 1. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound having the formula ##STR114## in which R.sub.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are hydrogen or alkyl groups having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms, or an ortho-alkylhydroxybenzyl group ##STR115## and Z is selected from the group consisting of singly linked phosphorus ester groups and double linked phosphorus ester groups taken in sufficient number to satisfy the valences of the two propanediol oxygen atoms; the singly linked phosphorus ester Z groups having the formula ##STR116## in which m is 0 or 1; R.sub.7 is the residue obtained by reaction of one hydroxyl group of an aliphatic or aromatic compound having 1 to 40 carbon atoms, and 1 to 4 hydroxyl groups; R.sub.8 is --O--R.sub.7, alkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, benzyl, or ##STR117## and the doubly linked phosphorus ester Z groups having the formula ##STR118## in which m is 0 or 1 and p is 0, 1, 2, or 3; when p is 0 R.sub.6 is alkyl, phenyl, benzyl, ##STR119## or a residue linked through one oxygen of a monohydric, dihydric, trihydric, or tetrahydric alcohol or phenol having 1 to 40 carbon atoms; and when p is 1, 2, or 3 R.sub.6 is a residue linked through two oxygens of a dihydric, trihydric, or tetrahydric alcohol or phenol having 2 to 40 carbon atoms.
- 2. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane 1,3-diol compound according to claim 1 in which Z is ##STR120## p is 0 and R.sub.6 is a residue linked through one oxygen of a polyhydric polycyclic phenol.
- 3. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 1 in which Z is ##STR121## p is 1 or 2 and R.sub.6 is a residue of a dihydric or trihydric alcohol.
- 4. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 1 in which Z is ##STR122## p is 1 or 2 and R.sub.6 is a residue of polyhydric polycyclic phenol.
- 5. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 2 represented by the formula ##STR123##
- 6. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 3 represented by the formula ##STR124##
- 7. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 4 represented by the formula ##STR125##
- 8. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 4 represented by the formula ##STR126##
- 9. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 4 represented by the formula ##STR127##
- 10. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 4 represented by the formula ##STR128##
- 11. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropane-1,3-diol compound according to claim 3 represented by the formula ##STR129##
- 12. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 in which the orthoalkylhydroxybenzyl group is 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl.
- 13. An orthoalkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 in which the ortho-alkylhydroxybenzyl group is 4-t-butyl-4,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxybenzyl.
- 14. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 in which the ortho-alkylhydroxylbenzyl group is 3-t-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methylbenzyl.
- 15. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 in which R is hydrogen.
- 16. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 in which R is an ortho-alkylhydroxybenzyl group.
- 17. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having an alkylidene group in which R.sub.4 is ##STR130## R.sub.5 is methyl, and n is zero.
- 18. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having an alkylidene group in which R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are ##STR131## and n is zero.
- 19. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having an alkylidene group in which R.sub.4 is tetramethylene, R.sub.5 is hydrogen, and n is one.
- 20. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having a cycloalkylidene group which is a 1,1-cyclohexylidene group.
- 21. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having a cycloalkylidene group which is a 2,2-bis(4'-4'-cyclohexylidenyl) propane group.
- 22. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having a phosphorus ester groups, in which m is zero.
- 23. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having two singly bound phosphorus ester groups, each of which is a dialkyl phosphite group.
- 24. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having two singly bound phosphorus ester groups, each of which is a diaryl phosphite groups.
- 25. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having two singly bound phosphorus ester groups, each of which is an aryl alkyl phosphite group.
- 26. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having a doubly bound phosphorus ester group which is an alkyl phosphite group.
- 27. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having a doubly bound phosphorus ester group which is an aryl phosphite group.
- 28. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having a doubly bound phosphorus ester group which is an ester of a polycyclic polyhydric phenol.
- 29. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 22 having a doubley bound phosphorus ester group which is an ester of a trihydric alcohol.
- 30. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 having phosphorus ester groups, in which m is one.
- 31. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 30 having phosphorus ester groups each of which is an aliphatic phosphate ester group.
- 32. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound having phosphorus ester groups according to claim 30, each of which is an aryl phosphate group.
- 33. An ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound having phosphorus ester groups according to claim 30, each of which is an alkylhydroxybenzylphosphonate ester group.
- 34. A stabilizer composition capable of increasing the resistance to deterioration on heating of synthetic resin, comprising an orthoalkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1 and at least one synthetic resin stabilizer selected from the group consisting of thiodipropionate esters, 1,2-epoxides, organic phosphites, polyhydric alcohols, polhydric alcohol 3-alkylthiopropionates, ultraviolet absorbers, heavy metal deactivators, and barium, calcium, magnesium, nickel, strontium, tin, zinc salts of monocarboxylic acids having 6 to 24 carbon atoms.
- 35. A stabilizer composition according to claim 34 in which the synthetic resin stabilizer is a thiodipropionate ester.
- 36. A stabilizer composition according to claim 34 in which the synthetic resin stabilizer is a 1,2-epoxide.
- 37. A stabilized synthetic resin composition comprising a synthetic resin and 0.01 to 5% by weight of an ortho-alkylhydroxybenzylpropanediol compound according to claim 1.
- 38. A stabilized synthetic resin composition according to claim 37 in which the synthetic resin is a polymer of an alpha olefin having 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 39. A stabilized synthetic resin composition according to claim 37 in which the synthetic resin is a polymer of vinyl chloride.
- 40. A stabilized synthetic resin composition according to claim 37 in which the synthetic resin is a polymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene.
- 41. A stabilized synthetic resin composition according to claim 37 in which the synthetic resin is a polymer of, adipic acid and 1,6-diaminohexane.
