Claims
- 1. An epoxy resin which is solid at room temperature and which comprises the product of epoxidizing a modified phenolic hydroxyl-containing resin having a low free difunctional phenol content comprising a resin of formula (1) ##STR3## wherein X represents a residue of difunctional phenol and n is 0 or a positive integer; and wherein the X's at different positions may be the same or different;
- said resin having a phenolic hydroxyl group equivalent of from 300 to 1200 q/eg; and,
- wherein residues of unreacted difunctional phenol is less than 5% by weight of the resin, with an epihalohydrin,
- said epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent in the range of 450 to 2500 g/eq.
- 2. The epoxy resin which is solid at room temperature according to claim 1 further reacted with difunctional phenol to provide an epoxy equivalent of from 1,500 to 60,000 g/eq and a number average molecular weight of from 3,000 to 15,000.
- 3. The room temperature solid epoxy resin of claim 2, characterized by a potassium permanganate consumption value smaller than 5 mg O/L, wherein said value is measured on extracted water which is prepared by adding, by a ratio of 1 ml water to 5 cm.sup.2 area of uncured dry film having a thickness of about 10 .mu.m and heat treated at 125.degree. C. at high pressure for 1 hour in a sealed bottle.
