Claims
- 1. A composition made by reacting at least one (I) metal phenoxide substituted with at least one hydrocarbon-based group of at least about 30 carbon atoms with (II) a carboxylic acid reagent containing from 1 to about 3 carboxyl-based groups and a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon-based aliphatic or alicyclic group containing a halogen atom.
- 2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein (I) is of the formula
- Ar(W).sub.x (M).sub.y (H).sub.x-y
- wherein Ar is a mononuclear aryl group bearing at least one hydrocarbon-based group of at least about 30 carbon atoms, each W is independently an oxygen or sulfur atom, M is an equivalent of a metal cation and x and y are each independently integers of 1 to about 3.
- 3. A composition as claimed in claim 2 wherein the metal cation M is a Group IA, Group IIA, Group IIIA, Group IB or Group IIB metal or mixtures thereof.
- 4. A composition as claimed in claim 3 wherein the hydrocarbon-based group is purely hydrocarbyl and contains up to about 250 carbon atoms.
- 5. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the carboxylic acid reagent (II) is of the formula
- A-(Cox).sub.1 -.sub.3
- wherein A represents a halogen-bearing hydrocarbon-based aliphatic or alicyclic group of 1 to about 20 carbon atoms and each Cox independently represents a carboxyl-based group selected from the group consisting of free carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride, carboxylate, carboxylic acid ester and carboxamide groups.
- 6. A composition as claimed in claim 2 wherein the carboxylic acid reagent (II) is of the formula
- A-(Cox).sub.1 -.sub.3
- wherein A represents a halogen-bearing hydrocarbon-based aliphatic or alicyclic group of 1 to about 20 carbon atoms and each Cox independently represents a carboxyl-based group selected from the group consisting of free carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride, carboxylate, carboxylic acid ester and carboxamide groups.
- 7. A composition as claimed in claim 6 wherein the halogen is chlorine or bromine, the Cox group is selected from the group consisting of carboxylates of Group IA metals, carboxylic esters of lower alkanols, carboxamides of lower alkyl mono-amines and ammonia, and carboxylates of lower alkyl mono-amines and ammonia.
- 8. A composition as claimed in claim 7 wherein the carboxylic acid reagent (II) is a lower alkanol ester of chloroacetic acid or a Group IA metal chloroacetate.
- 9. A composition made by reacting at least one (I) phenoxide of the formula
- Ar(W).sub.x (M).sub.y (H).sub.x-y
- wherein Ar is a mononuclear aryl group bearing at least one hydrocarbon-based group of at least about 30 and about 250 carbon atoms, each W is independently an oxygen or sulfur atom, M is an equivalent of a metal cation and x and y are each independently integers of 1 to about 3, with (II) at least one carboxylic acid reagent of the formula
- A-(Cox).sub.1 -.sub.3
- wherein A represents an aliphatic- or alicyclic-based group containing at least one halogen atom of 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, each Cox independently representing a carboxyl-based group selected from the group consisting of free carboxylic acid, carboxylic anhydride, carboxylate, carboxylic acid ester and carboxamide groups.
- 10. A composition as claimed in claim 9 wherein (I) is of the formula ##STR12## wherein R represents an aliphatic-based group of at least about 30 carbon atoms, R' represents a hydrocarbon-based group of 1 to about 30 carbon atoms, W is an oxygen or sulfur atom, and M is an equivalent of a metal cation, halogen is chlorine or bromine, and the Cox group is selected from the group consisting of carboxylates of Group IA metals, carboxylic esters of lower alkanols, carboxamides of lower alkyl mono-amines and ammonia, and carboxylates of lower alkyl mono-amines and ammonia.
- 11. A composition made by reacting the composition claimed in claim 10 with at least one polyamine, higher polyhydric alcohol, or mixture thereof.
- 12. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein the polyamine is ethylene polyamine of the formula ##STR13## wherein a is an average of integers between 1 and about 10, each A is independently a hydrogen atom or hydrocarbyl group having up to about 30 carbon atoms and "Alkylene" is an alkylene group of 1 to about 10 carbon atoms.
- 13. A composition as claimed in claim 11 wherein the polyhydric alcohols consist of 3 to about 6 hydroxyl groups and 3 to about 10 carbon atoms, and hydrogen atoms.
- 14. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 1.
- 15. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 2.
- 16. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 4.
- 17. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 6.
- 18. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 8.
- 19. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 10.
- 20. A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating oil viscosity and a minor amount of the composition claimed in claim 11.
- 21. A concentrate comprising about 10 to about 90 percent of the composition claimed in claim 1 and a normally liquid organic solvent/diluent.
- 22. A concentrate comprising about 10 to about 90 percent of the composition claimed in claim 2 and a normally liquid organic solvent/diluent.
- 23. A concentrate comprising about 10 to about 90 percent of the composition claimed in claim 4 and a normally liquid organic solvent/diluent.
- 24. A concentrate comprising about 10 to about 90 percent of the composition claimed in claim 10 and a normally liquid organic solvent/diluent.
- 25. A concentrate comprising about 10 to about 90 percent of the composition claimed in claim 11 and a normally liquid organic solvent/diluent.
- 26. A composition made by post-treating the composition of claim 1 with at least one reactive heterocycle of the formula ##STR14## wherein the circle represents a chain of 2 or about 3 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen, sulfur or >NQ group, Q being a hydrogen or C.sub.1 -.sub.30 hydrocarbon-based group and each carbon atom of the circle can be substituted with a Q group.
- 27. A composition made by post-treating the composition of claim 2 with at least one reactive heterocycle of the formula ##STR15## wherein the circle represents a chain of 2 or about 3 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen, sulfur or >NQ group, Q being a hydrogen or C.sub.1 -.sub.30 hydrocarbon-based group and each carbon atom of the circle can be substituted with a Q group.
- 28. A composition made by post-treating the composition of claim 3 with at least one reactive heterocycle of the formula ##STR16## wherein the circle represents a chain of 2 or about 3 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen, sulfur or >NQ group, Q being a hydrogen or C.sub.1 -.sub.30 hydrocarbon-based group and each carbon atom of the circle can be substituted with a Q group.
- 29. A composition made by post-treating the composition of claim 4 with at least one reactive heterocycle of the formula ##STR17## wherein the circle represents a chain of 2 or about 3 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen, sulfur or >NQ group, Q being a hydrogen or C.sub.1 -.sub.30 hydrocarbon-based group and each carbon atom of the circle can be substituted with a Q group.
- 30. A composition made by post-treating the composition of claim 10 with at least one reactive heterocycle of the formula ##STR18## wherein the circle represents a chain of 2 or about 3 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen, sulfur or >NQ group, Q being a hydrogen or C.sub.1 -.sub.30 hydrocarbon-based group and each carbon atom of the circle can be substituted with a Q group.
