Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a vulcanizable silica-reinforced rubber and a dihydrocarbyl mercaptohydrocarbylphosphonate coupling agent.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the phosphonate can be represented by the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is any alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or arylalkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of 1 to 15 carbon atoms and n is any integer from 1 to 18.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the phosphonate is dimethyl 3-mercaptopropylphosphonate.
- 4. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the rubber is selected from the group consisting of
- natural rubber,
- homopolymers of conjugated dienes,
- copolymers of conjugated dienes, and
- terpolymers of ethylene, propylene and a nonconjugated diolefin.
- 5. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the rubber is a copolymer of conjugated diene and monovinylarene.
- 6. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the rubber is butyl rubber.
- 7. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the rubber is nitrile rubber.
- 8. A composition according to claim 4 or 5 wherein the rubber is prepared employing a conjugated diene containing 4 to about 12 carbon atoms per molecule.
- 9. A composition according to claim 5 wherein the conjugated diene is at least one selected from:
- 1,3-butadiene
- isoprene
- piperylene
- 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene
- 3-butyl-1,3-octadiene
- 2-phenyl-1,3-butadiene.
- 10. A composition according to claim 5 wherein the monovinylarene is at least one selected from:
- styrene
- .alpha.-methylstyrene
- 3-methylstyrene
- 4-n-propylstyrene
- 4-p-tolystyrene
- 1-vinylnaphthalene.
