Claims
- 1. A polyester resin comprising the reaction product of (A) one or more compounds containing at least two hydroxyl groups; and (B) one or more dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides thereof wherein at least a portion of component (A) is one or more of an oligomer having recurring units represented by the following general formula ##STR5## wherein each A is independently ##STR6## or a divalent hydrocarbon group having from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; each Q is independently oxygen or sulfur; each R is independently a hydrocarbon group having from about 1 to about 10 carbon atoms; each R' is independently a --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2 group or a --CXH--CXH.sub.2 group, wherein X is chlorine or bromine; each Z is independently a terminal moiety; each m is independently zero or one; each m' independently has a value from 1 to about 5; each n independently has a value of 2, 3 or 4; and x has an average value of from 1 to about 10.
- 2. A polyester resin of claim 1 wherein in component (A) each A is independently a divalent hydrocarbon group having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms; Q is oxygen; each R is independently a hydrocarbon group having from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms; each m has a value of 1, each m' independently has a value of from about 1 to about 2; each n has a value of 3; and x has an average value of from about 1 to about 10; and component (B) contains at least one of the group consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, adipic acid, endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic acid or anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic acid or anhydride.
- 3. A composition of claim 2 wherein in component (A) each A independently is a divalent hydrocarbon group having either 1 or 3 carbon atoms; each m' has a value of 1; and n has a value of 3.
- 4. A polyester of claims 1, 2 or 3 containing from about 20 to about 80 percent by weight of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer based upon total composition.
- 5. A polyester of claim 4 wherein said monomer is styrene, .alpha.-methylstyrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl toluene, t-butylstyrene, dicyclopentadiene acrylate or a mixture of any two or more.
- 6. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 4 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
- 7. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 5 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
- 8. An unsaturated polyester resin prepared by
- (I) reacting a mixture comprising
- (A) dicyclopentadiene;
- (B) at least one .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, anhydride thereof or mixture of such acids and anhydrides;
- (C) if component (B) contains an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, then water is employed as reactant in a quantity so as to hydrolyze at least about ten mole percent of said anhydride up to an excess of about 50 mole percent of said anhydride;
- (II) reacting the product resulting from step I with a mixture of
- (D) a diol or a mixture of diols;
- (E) an oligomer or a mixture of oligomers having recurring units represented by the following general formula ##STR7## wherein each A is independently ##STR8## or a divalent hydrocarbon group having from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms; each Q is independently oxygen or sulfur; each R is independently a hydrocarbon group having from about 1 to about 10 carbon atoms; each R' is independently a --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2 group or a --CXH--CXH.sub.2 group, wherein X is chlorine or bromine; each Z is independently a terminal moiety; each m is independently zero or one; each m' independently has a value from 1 to about 5; each n independently has a value of 2, 3 or 4; and x has an average value of from 1 to about 10; wherein
- (a) components (A)-(E) are employed in a molar ratio of A/B/C/D/E of from about 0.01/1/0/1.01/1.09 to about 1/1/2/1.099/0.001 and
- (b) said reaction being conducted at a temperature of from about 110.degree. C. to about 205.degree. C. for a time sufficient to reduce the acid number from about 75 to about 20.
- 9. A polyester resin of claim 8 wherein
- (1) component (B) comprises maleic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid or a mixture thereof;
- (2) component (D) comprises dicyclopentadiene dimethanol, cyclohexane dimethanol, dibromoneopentyl glycol, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, diethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol or a mixture thereof; and
- (3) in component (E), each A is independently a divalent hydrocarbon group having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms; Q is oxygen; each R is independently a hydrocarbon group having from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms; each m has a value of 1, each m' independently has a value of from about 1 to about 2; each n has a value of 3; and x has an average value of from about 1 to about 10; and wherein the molar ratio of A/B/C/D/E is from about 0.6/1/0/0.8/0.3 to about 1/1/1/0.2/0.01.
- 10. A polyester resin of claim 9 wherein in component (E) each A independently is a divalent hydrocarbon group having either 1 or 3 carbon atoms; each m' has a value of 1; and n has a value of 3.
- 11. The resin of claims 8, 9 or 10 wherein component (A) also contains codimers of cyclopentadiene and diolefin dimers.
- 12. The resin of claims 8, 9, 10 or 11 wherein in component (B) up to 60 mole percent of said .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride is replaced with (a) at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, (b) at least one saturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof or (c) mixtures thereof.
- 13. The resin of claim 12 wherein up to about 40 mole percent of said .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride is replaced.
- 14. A polyester of claims 8, 9 or 10 containing from about 20 to about 80 percent by weight of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer based upon total composition.
- 15. A polyester of claim 14 wherein said monomer is styrene, .alpha.-methylstyrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl toluene, t-butylstyrene, dicyclopentadiene acrylate or a mixture of any two or more.
- 16. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 14 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
- 17. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 15 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
- 18. A polyester of claims 11 containing from about 20 to about 80 percent by weight of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer based upon total composition.
- 19. A polyester of claim 18 wherein said monomer is styrene, .alpha.-methylstyrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl toluene, t-butylstyrene, dicyclopentadiene acrylate or a mixture of any two or more.
- 20. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 18 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
- 21. A product resulting from curing a polyester of claim 19 in the presence of a suitable curing system at conditions sufficient to cause curing thereof.
