Claims
- 1. A photochromic polyurethane characterized by a .sub..DELTA. A at 2 minutes of greater than 50% and a T.sub.50 of less than 2 minutes consisting essentially of:
- a) an isocyanate reactive mixture consisting essentially of:
- i) from about 40 to about 85% by weight of one or more polyols having a nominal functionality of from 2 to 4 and a molecular weight of from 500 to 6000 g/mol;
- ii) from about 15 to about 60% by weight of one or more diols or triols or mixtures thereof having a functionality of from 2 to 3 and molecular weights of from 62 to 499;
- b) an aliphatic polyisocyanate having a functionality ranging from about 2 to about 3; and
- c) a photochromic compound selected from the group consisting of spirooxazines, fulgides, fulgimides, and naphthopyrans,
- wherein the photochromic compound c) is present in an amount of from 0.01 to 5 parts per hundred parts by weight of the isocyanate reactive mixture a).
- 2. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said one or more polyols has a molecular weight of from 1,000 to 3,000 g/mole.
- 3. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said one or more polyols has a functionality of about 2.
- 4. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said one or more polyols is selected from a group consisting of polyether polyols, polyester polyols and polycarbonate polyols.
- 5. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 4, wherein said polyether polyol is selected from a group consisting of polypropylene glycol and poly(tetramethylene glycol).
- 6. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 4, wherein said polyester polyol is butylene adipate.
- 7. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 4, wherein said polycarbonate polyol is polyhexamethylene carbonate.
- 8. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said diol is 1,4-butanediol.
- 9. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein component a) ii) is a polypropylene oxide triol.
- 10. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said aliphatic polyisocyanate has a functionality of about 2.
- 11. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 10, wherein said aliphatic polyisocyanate comprises mixtures of the stereoisomers of bis-(4-isocyanatocyclohexl)-methane.
- 12. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said photochromic compound is 3,3-diphenyl-3-H-naphtho [2,1-b]pyran.
- 13. A photochromic polyurethane according to claim 1, wherein said photochromic compound is 1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethyl-spiro-2H-indole-2,3'-(3H)-naphtho(2,1 -b)(1,4)oxazine.
