Claims
- 1. In a photocomposition machine including font means for providing at least one font of a plurality of characters, projection light source means for successively illuminating preselected characters of said font means so that the characters are projected along an optical axis, a photosensitive receiving sheet, and input means for generating point size data representative of the point size of a character selected by an operator for photocomposition from a plurality of available point sizes, improved apparatus for accurately focusing characters at the selected point size onto the receiving sheet comprising:
- variator lens means for successively forming a plurality of aerial images representing a plurality of degrees of magnification of said preselected characters by movement of said variator lens means parallel to the optical axis into a plurality of different composing positions determined by the point size data;
- collimator lens means movable parallel to the optical axis into a plurality of different composing positions determined by the point size data in which the aerial image forms an object for the collimator lens means, so that collimated light rays are formed;
- decollimator lens means responsive to the collimated light rays for focusing a print image corresponding to the aerial image on the receiving sheet and for moving parallel to the optical axis to provide escapement for the preselected characters;
- means for defining a first reference position and a second reference position; and
- means for driving the variator lens means to the first reference position in a predetermined direction and driving the variator lens means from the first reference position to a first one of said composing positions determined by said point size data only in a direction opposite the predetermined direction in which the variator lens means is driven to the first reference position, and for driving the collimator lens means to the second reference position in a predetermined direction and driving the collimator lens means from the second reference position to a second one of said composing positions determined by said point size data only in a direction opposite the predetermined direction in which the collimator lens means is driven to the second reference position, whereby the reliability with which the illuminated character is focused onto the receiving sheet is increased.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for driving causes the variator lens means and collimator lens means to be driven to the first and second reference positions each time operation of the photocomposition machine is initiated.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2, and further comprising means for defining a third reference position; and wherein the means for driving further comprises means for driving the decollimator lens means to the third reference position each time operation of the photocomposition machine is initiated.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the variator lens means comprises:
- a magnifying lens; and
- first carriage means for moving the magnifying lens along the optical axis through a first path having end points.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the collimator lens means comprises:
- a collimating lens; and
- second carriage means for moving the collimating lens along the optical axis through a second path having end points.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the first reference point is located at an end point of the first path and wherein the second reference point is located at an end point of the second path.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the first and second reference points are defined by means for temporarily stopping the movement of the variator lens means and the collimator lens means.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the means for temporarily stopping comprises electrical switch means.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the decollimator lens means comprises:
- a decollimating lens; and
- third carriage means for moving the decollimating lens along the optical axis through a third path having end points.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the third reference position is located at an end point of the third path.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1 and further including means for producing a first drive signal according to said point size data, related to the distance between said first reference position and said first one of said composing positions, and for producing a second drive signal according to said point size data, related to the distance between said second reference position and said second one of said composing positions; and wherein said means for driving is responsive to the first drive signal for driving the variator lens means from the first reference position to said first one of said composing positions and is responsive to the second drive signal for driving the collimator lens means from the second reference position to said second one of said composing positions.
- 12. In a photocomposition machine having a lens system of a variator lens for primary focusing, a collimating lens for accepting an aerial image from said variator lens and focusing the image to infinity, and a decollimating lens to refocus, means for projecting an image in light and shadow to said variator lens; the improvement in lens movement control, comprising:
- a guide-way establishing a carriage track;
- a first helix screw parallel to said track, a first carriage on said track, a follower of said carriage engaged with said screw to transfer drive motion to said carriage, said collimating lens mounted on said first carriage, and a stepper motor in drive connection to said first helix screw;
- a second helix screw parallel to said track, a second carriage on said track, a follower of said carriage engaged with said second screw to transfer drive motion to said second carriage, said variator lens mounted on said second carriage, and a stepper motor in drive connection to said second helix screw;
- a negator spring interconnecting said carriages to hold the followers thereof in contact with one side only of the helix in which the follower is engaged;
- first and second limit sensors placed at extreme positions of said first and second carriages respectively along said track for producing a home control signal for each carriage;
- control means including memory means for storing entered data, said control means having a program routine which is operative at machine start-up prior to initiating composition to direct said stepper motors to drive the carriages toward said extreme position until said sensors produce a home data signal, said control means in response to carriage arrival providing first and second lens control signals, each representative of the difference between the lens position of said home signals, and the lens position of a selected point size position to which the lenses are to be moved; and
- said first and second stepper motors stepping a programmed number of steps to drive the helix screws for moving said first and second lens carriages respectively to corresponding new positions in response to said corresponding lens position control signals.
