Claims
- 1. A molding obtained by a process which comprises the steps of:
- (a) providing a purified water-soluble crosslinkable prepolymer which is substantially free from undesirable constituents, said undesirable constituents being selected from the group consisting of monomeric, oligomeric or polymeric starting compounds used for the preparation of the prepolymer and secondary products that have formed during the preparation of the prepolymer;
- (b) introducing the crosslinkable prepolymer into a mold;
- (c) crosslinking the crosslinkable prepolymer to form a molding; and
- (d) opening the mold such that the molding may be removed,
- wherein the molding does not require subsequent extraction steps for the intended use.
- 2. A molding of claim 1, wherein the molding is a contact lens.
- 3. A molding of claim 1, wherein the substance is a substantially aqueous solution of a crosslinkable material which is a prepolymer, wherein said prepolymer is a water-soluble polymer that comprises crosslinkable groups, but which is substantially uncrosslinked.
- 4. A molding of claim 3, wherein the substantially aqueous solution of the water-soluble prepolymer comprising crosslinkable groups is free or substantially free from undesired constituents, such as especially monomeric, oligomeric or polymeric starting compounds used for the preparation of the prepolymer, or secondary products that have formed during the preparation of the prepolymer.
- 5. A molding of claim 1, wherein the crosslinkable material is a hydrophilic polymeric material.
- 6. A molding of claim 1, wherein the crosslinkable material has a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2000.
- 7. A molding of claim 6, wherein the crosslinkable material has a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to about 300,000.
- 8. A molding of claim 7, wherein the crosslinkable material has a weight average molecular weight of about 50,000 to about 100,000.
- 9. A molding of claim 1, wherein the crosslinkable material is a poly(vinyl alcohol).
- 10. A molding of claim 9, wherein the poly(vinyl alcohol) has a weight-average molecular weight of at least about 2000 that, based on the number of hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, include from about 0.5% to about 80% of units of formula I: ##STR6## wherein: R is lower alkylene having up to 8 carbon atoms,
- R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having up to 7 carbon atoms, and
- R.sub.2 is an unsaturated, electron-attracting copolymerizable radical.
- 11. A molding of claim 1, wherein the step of crosslinking is initiated by applying radiative energy for a period of less than about five minutes.
- 12. A molding of claim 11, wherein the step of crosslinking is initiated by applying radiative energy for a period of less than about one minute.
- 13. A molding of claim 12, wherein the step of crosslinking is initiated by applying radiative energy for a period of less than about 30 seconds.
- 14. An ophthalmic lens obtained by a process which comprises the steps of:
- (a) purifying a water soluble crosslinkable prepolymer such that the prepolymer is substantially free from monomeric, oligomeric or polymeric starting compounds used for the preparation of the prepolymer and secondary products formed during the preparation of the prepolymer;
- (b) introducing said prepolymer into a mold;
- (c) crosslinking the crosslinkable prepolymer to form an ophthalmic lens; and
- (d) opening the mold such that the ophthalmic lens may be removed,
- wherein the ophthalmic lens does not require subsequent extraction steps for the intended use.
