Claims
- 1. A prepolymer which is a derivative of a polyvinyl alcohol having a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2000 that, based on the number of hydroxy groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, comprises from approximately 0.5 to approximately 80% of units of formula I ##STR6## eherein R is lower alkylene having up to 8 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl,
- p is zero or one,
- q is zero or one,
- R.sup.3 is an olefinically unsaturated copolymerisable radical having from about 2 to 8 carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are each independently lower alkylene having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, arylene having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, a saturated divalent cycloaliphatic group having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, arylenealkylene or alkylenearylene having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms or arylenealkylenearylene having from 13 to 16 carbon atoms.
- 2. A prepolymer according to claim 1, wherein R is lower alkylene having up to 6 carbon atoms, p is zero and R.sup.3 is alkenyl having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 3. A prepolymer according to claim 1, wherein R is lower alkylene having up to 6 carbon atoms, p is one, q is zero, R.sup.5 is lower alkylene having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is alkenyl having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 4. A prepolymer according to claim 1, wherein R is lower alkylene having up to 6 carbon atoms, p is one, q is one, R.sup.4 is lower alkylene having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, phenylene, unsubstituted or substituted by lower alkyl, cyclohexylene or cyclohexylene-lower alkylene, unsubstituted or substituted by lower alkyl, phenylene-lower alkylene, lower alkylene-phenylene or phenylene-lower alkylene-phenylene, R.sup.5 is lower alkylene having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is alkenyl having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 5. A prepolymer according to claim 1, which is a derivative of a polyvinyl alcohol having a weightavarage molecular weight of at least about 2000 that, based on the number of hydroxy groups of the polyvinyl alcohol, comprises from approximately 1 to approximately 15% of units of formula I.
- 6. A polymer, obtainable by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 1 in the absence or presence of an additional vinylic comonomer.
- 7. A polymer according to claim 6, obtained by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 18 in a substantially pure form, which form is substantially free from reaction products and starting materials, in the absence or presence of an additional vinylic comonomer.
- 8. A polymer according to claim 7, wherein the polymer is converted into substantially pure form by from one to ten ultrafiltrations.
- 9. A polymer according to claim 6, obtainable by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 1 in the absence of an additional vinylic comonomer.
- 10. A polymer according to claim 6, obtainable by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 18 in the presence of from 0.5 to 80 units of an additional vinylic comonomer per unit of formula I.
- 11. A process for the preparation of a polymer according to claim 6, which comprises photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 1 in the absence or presence of an additional vinylic comonomer.
- 12. A process according to claim 11, wherein the prepolymer is used in substantially pure form, which form is substantially free from reaction products and starting materials.
- 13. A process according to claim 12, wherein the per polymer is converted into a substantially pure form by from one to ten ultrafiltrations.
- 14. A process according to claim 11, which is carried out in solution.
- 15. A moulding consisting substantially of a polymer according to claim 6.
- 16. A moulding according to claim 15, which is a contact lens.
- 17. A process for the manufacture of a moulding according to claim 15, which comprises photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 1, in the absence or presence of an additional vinylic comonomer, in a closed mould.
- 18. A process for the manufacture of a contact lens according to claim 16, which comprises photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 1, in the absence or presence of an additional vinylic comonomer, in a closed contact lens mould in the Full-Mould process.
- 19. A polymer according to claim 10, obtained by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 18 in the presence of from 1 to 30 units of vinylic comonomer per unit of formula I.
- 20. A polymer according to claim 19, obtained by photocrosslinking a prepolymer according to claim 18 in the presence of from 5 to 20 units of vinylic comonomer per unit of formula I.
- 21. A process of claim 14, wherein said solution is an aqueous solution.
