Claims
- 1. A periodic electromagnetic medium having a positive effective index, said medium comprising a surface that provides an interface with an ambient medium; and a periodic structure that provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface, wherein said incident electromagnetic field is within a range of frequencies.
- 2. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said periodic structure provides single-beam negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface.
- 3. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said medium is comprised of dielectric material.
- 4. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said medium is comprised of metallic material.
- 5. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said periodic structure is a two-dimensional periodic structure.
- 6. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said periodic structure is a three-dimensional periodic structure.
- 7. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said periodic structure provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface at any angle of incidence.
- 8. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said medium forms a lens in an imaging system.
- 9. A periodic electromagnetic medium comprising a surface that provides an interface with an ambient medium; and a periodic structure that provides a plurality of frequency bands including a lowest frequency band and that provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface, wherein said incident electromagnetic field is within a range of frequencies within said lowest frequency band.
- 10. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said periodic structure provides single-beam negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface.
- 11. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said medium has a positive effective index.
- 12. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said medium has a negative effective index.
- 13. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said medium is comprised of dielectric material.
- 14. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said medium is comprised of metallic material.
- 15. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said periodic structure is a two-dimensional periodic structure.
- 16. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said periodic structure is a three-dimensional periodic structure.
- 17. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said periodic structure provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface at any angle of incidence.
- 18. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 9, wherein said medium forms a lens in an imaging system.
- 19. A three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium, said medium comprising a surface that provides an interface with an ambient medium; and a periodic structure that provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface, wherein said incident electromagnetic field is within a range of frequencies.
- 20. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said periodic structure provides single-beam negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface.
- 21. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said medium has a positive effective index.
- 22. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said medium has a negative effective index.
- 23. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said medium is comprised of dielectric material.
- 24. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said medium is comprised of metallic material.
- 25. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said periodic structure provides negative refraction within said medium of an incident electromagnetic field incident on said surface at any angle of incidence.
- 26. The three-dimensional periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 19, wherein said medium forms a lens in an imaging system.
- 27. A periodic electromagnetic medium having a positive effective index and comprising a first surface for receiving an incident electromagnetic field having a first wavelength; a second surface for producing a focused electromagnetic field; and a periodic structure for providing a focal spot size that is smaller than said first wavelength.
- 28. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 27, wherein said medium is comprised of dielectric material.
- 29. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 27, wherein said medium is comprised of metallic material.
- 30. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 27, wherein said periodic structure is a two-dimensional periodic structure.
- 31. The periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 27, wherein said periodic structure is a three-dimensional periodic structure.
- 32. A dielectric periodic electromagnetic medium comprising a first surface for receiving an incident electromagnetic field having a first wavelength; a second surface for producing a focused electromagnetic field; and a periodic structure for providing a focal spot size that is smaller than said first wavelength.
- 33. The dielectric periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 32, wherein said medium has a positive effective index.
- 34. The dielectric periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 32, wherein said medium has a negative effective index.
- 35. The dielectric periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 32, wherein said periodic structure is a two-dimensional periodic structure.
- 36. The dielectric periodic electromagnetic medium as claimed in claim 32, wherein said periodic structure is a three-dimensional periodic structure.
