Claims
- 1. A method for preparing a sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester composition, wherein less than 7% of the fatty acid moieties comprises saturated fatty acids and more than 50% comprises polyunsaturated fatty acids, comprisinga) esterifying a sterol and/or stanol with an excessive amount of high PUFA alcohol ester in the presence of an interesteritication catalyst and b) fractionating the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester in the high PUFA alcohol ester to obtain the defined fatty acid ester composition.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the fractionation is facilitated by adding fatty acid alcohol ester, preferably the same high PUFA alcohol ester as used in the esterification, after the esterification step.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 including an additional step of washing, drying and optionally bleaching the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester and high PUPA alcohol ester mixture before the fractionation procedure.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 including an additional step of removing the unreacted high PUFA alcohol ester from the fractionation mixture, preferably by deodorisation.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition comprises a sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester composition, wherein the fatty acid moiety comprises a blend of less than 7% of saturated fatty acids and more than 50% of polyunsaturated fatty acids and wherein comprises a stanol fatty acid ester composition.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition comprises a sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester composition, wherein the fatty acid moiety comprises a blend of less than 7% of saturated fatty acids and more than 50% of polyunsaturated fatty acids and wherein less than 5% of the fatty acid moieties comprise saturated fatty acids.
- 7. A method for preparing an edible oil or fat blend with elevated sterol and/or stanol content comprising a sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester composition, wherein less than 7% of the fatty acid moieties comprises saturated fatty acids and more than 50% comprises polyunsaturated fatty acids, comprisinga) esterifying a sterol and/or sterol with an excessive amount of high PUFA alcohol ester in the presence of an interesterification catalyst b) fractionating the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester in the high PUFA alcohol ester to obtain the defined fatty acid ester composition and c) mixing the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester with a vegetable oil or a fat blend.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein step c is performed before step b.
- 9. The method according to claim 7 including an additional step of washing, drying and optionally bleaching the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester and high PUFA alcohol ester before the fractionation procedure.
- 10. The method according to claim 7 including an additional step of removing the unreacted high PUFA alcohol ester from the fractionation mixture, preferably by deodorisation.
- 11. The method according to claim 7 including an additional step of deodorising the mixture after step c.
- 12. A method for preparing an edible oil or fat blend with elevated sterol and/or stanol content comprising a sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester composition, wherein less than 7% of the fatty acid moieties comprises saturated fatty acids and more than 50% comprises polyunsaturated fatty acids, comprisinga) interesterifying a sterol and/or stanol and an edible oil with an excessive amount of high PUFA alcohol ester in the presence of an interesterification catalyst and b) fractionating the sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester to obtain the composition.
- 13. The method according to claim 12 including an additional step before the fractionation procedure comprising washing, drying and optionally bleaching and/or deodorising to obtain a refined, bleached and deodorised mixture of interesterified oil and sterol and/or stanol fatty acid ester.
- 14. The method according to claim 12, wherein edible oil or fat is added to the mixture after the step a or after the refining steps.
- 15. The method according to claim 12 with an additional last step including deodorising the edible oil or fat blend.
