Claims
- 1. An apparatus comprising:
- a processing unit;
- a memory system, said memory system being connected to said processing unit; and
- a program stored in said memory system for execution on said processing unit, said program including:
- an optimization mechanism that optimizes remediation of a contaminated groundwater site by a minimization of a groundwater remediation design objective J with respect to a groundwater remediation design vector v(t), wherein t denotes time, wherein v(t) is a piecewise continuous function of t, wherein J is functionally dependent on both v(t) and a state vector x(t), and wherein dx(t)/dt and v(t) are functionally related by a differential equation of: dx/dt=T(x(t),v(t),t) subject to the condition of x(t.sub.0)=x.sub.initial.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising for use by said program:
- site characterization information, design objective information, and design constraints.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the site characterization information includes:
- contaminants and location of said contaminants at a contaminated groundwater site; and
- physical properties of said contaminated groundwater site including at least one of size, depth, topography, volume, materials, hydraulic conductivity, porosity, dispersivity, retardation, biological reactivity, hydraulic head, and recharge rates.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said design objective information includes information selected from at least one of: cost, cleanup time, contamination level, number of cleanup devices, and minimum flow rate from cleanup devices.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising, for use by said program, remediation cleanup devices including at least one of: extraction wells, slurry walls, infiltration caps, soil vapor extractors, air spargers, bioventors, and water treatment plants.
- 6. A program product comprising:
- a recordable media; and
- a program recorded on said recordable media by a computer system for execution on a central processing unit, said program having:
- an optimization mechanism that optimizes remediation of a contaminated groundwater site by a minimization of a groundwater remediation design objective J with respect to a groundwater remediation design vector v(t), wherein t denotes time, wherein v(t) is a piecewise continuous function of t, wherein J is functionally dependent on both v(t) and a state vector x(t), and wherein dx(t)/dt and v(t) are functionally related by a differential equation of: dx/dt=T(x(t),v(t),t) subject to the condition of x(t.sub.0)=x.sub.initial.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said optimization mechanism is subject to a twice-continuously differentiable constraint that functionally relates v(t), x(t) and t.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said optimization mechanism includes an integration of a system of coupled ordinary differential equations, and wherein said ordinary differential equations are linear.
