Claims
- 1. A method of making pile weatherstripping having a backing strip and at least one internal fin between adjacent rows of pile and at least one fin external to the rows of pile on the backing strip, the fins being of desired height with respect to the pile, the method comprising the steps of:
- a) feeding a first web having longitudinal edges onto a side of a travelling band which also has longitudinal edges;
- b) controllably aligning said first web with one of said longitudinal edges of said first web parallel to and at a first fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band according to the desired height of said internal fin in said pile weatherstripping, and with the other of said longitudinal edges of said first web overhanging said one of said longitudinal edges of said band by engaging said first web and said band and indexing said web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said internal fin;
- c) wrapping said other of said longitudinal edges of said first web around one of said longitudinal edges of said band;
- d) winding yarn around said first web and said band;
- e) feeding a second web having longitudinal edges onto said yarn wound around said first web and said band;
- f) controllably aligning said second web with one of said longitudinal edges of said second web parallel to and at a first fixed and predetermined distance from said one of said longitudinal edges of said band used to align said first web according to the desired height of said external fin in said pile weatherstripping, and with the other of said longitudinal edges of said second web being wrapped around said yarn where said yarn wraps around said one of said longitudinal edges of said band by engaging said second web and said band-and indexing said second web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said external fin;
- g) attaching first and second backing strips to said second web, said yarn, and said first web where they wrap around said one of said longitudinal edges of said band, and to said yarn where said yarn wraps around the other of said longitudinal edges of said band; and
- h) slitting said yarn without cutting said web at a second fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band, thereby providing two pile weatherstrips, said yarn forming said rows of pile, at least one of said weatherstrips having an internal fin formed by said first web and an external fin formed by said second web, the heights of said fins and the height of said pile being controlled in precise predetermined relationship.
- 2. A method of making pile weatherstripping in accordance with claim 1 wherein a second pile weatherstripping having at least one internal fin and at least one external fin can be made simultaneously with said first pile weatherstripping further comprising the steps of:
- a) feeding a third web having longitudinal edges onto a second side of a travelling band which also has longitudinal edges;
- b) controllably aligning said third web with one of said longitudinal edges of said third web parallel to and at a fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said second side of said band according to the desired height of said internal fin in said second pile weatherstripping, and with the other of said longitudinal edges of said third web overhanging said one of said longitudinal edges of said second side of said band by engaging said third web and said band and indexing said third web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said internal fin;
- c) wrapping said other of said longitudinal edges of said third web around one of said longitudinal edges of second side of said band;
- d) feeding a fourth web having longitudinal edges onto said yarn wound around said third web and said second side of said travelling band;
- e) controllably aligning said fourth web with one of said longitudinal edges of said fourth web parallel to and at a fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said second side of said band according to the desired height of said external fin in said second pile weatherstripping, and with the other of said longitudinal edges of said fourth web being wrapped around said yarn where said yarn wraps around said one of said longitudinal edges of said band by engaging said fourth web and said band and indexing said fourth web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said external fin, and thereby providing in said slitting step a pair of weatherstrips with said yarn forming said rows of pile, each weatherstrip having an internal fin formed by said first and third webs, respectively, and an external fin formed by said second and fourth webs, respectively, the heights of said fins and the height of said pile being controlled in precise predetermined relationship.
- 3. Apparatus for making pile weatherstripping having a backing strip and at least one fin between adjacent rows of pile and at least one fin external to the rows of pile on the packing strip of a desired height with respect to the pile using a travelling band, which apparatus comprises:
- a) first feeding means for feeding a first web having longitudinal edges onto a side of said travelling band which also has longitudinal edges;
- b) first aligning means for controllably aligning said first web with one of said longitudinal edges of said first web parallel to and at a first fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band according to the desired height of said internal fin in said pile weatherstripping, said controllably aligning means comprising means for engaging said first web and said band and indexing said first web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said internal fin;
- c) first wrapping means for wrapping the other of said longitudinal edges of said first web around said one of said longitudinal edges of said band;
- d) means for winding yarn around said first web and said band;
- e) second feeding means for feeding a second web having longitudinal edges onto said yarn wound around said first web and said band;
- f) second aligning means for controllably aligning said second web with one of said longitudinal edges of said second web parallel to and at a second fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band according to the desired height of said external fin in said pile weatherstripping, said controllably aligning means comprising means for engaging said second web and said wrapped band and indexing said second web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said external fin;
- g) second wrapping means for wrapping the other of said longitudinal edges of said second web around said yarn along one of said longitudinal edges of said band;
- h) means for attaching first and second backing strips to said second web, said yarn, and said first web where they wrap around one of said longitudinal edges of said band and where said yarn wraps around the other of said longitudinal edges of said band; and
- i) means for slitting said yarn without cutting said web at a third fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band, thereby providing a pair of weatherstrips with said yarn forming said rows of pile, at least one of said weatherstrips having an internal fin formed by said first web and an external fin formed by said second web, the heights of said fins and the height of said pile being in precise, controllably determined relationship.
- 4. The apparatus in accordance with claim 3 wherein third and fourth webs having longitudinal edges are provided for making a second pile weatherstripping having internal and external fins simultaneously with the making of said first pile weatherstripping; said first feeding means comprises means for feeding said first and third webs each onto opposite sides of said band; said first controllably aligning means comprises means for aligning one of said longitudinal edges of different ones of said first and third webs with different ones of the longitudinal edges of said band at predetermined distances therefrom; said wrapping means wraps both of said first and third webs; said engaging and indexing means being operative for engaging each of said first and third webs and indexing them with respect to the band separately at different ones of said longitudinal edges, said indexing means comprising either an edge of said web against a channel or at least one longitudinal indentation in said web against an edge of said band; said winding means comprises means for winding said yarn around said first and third webs and said band; said second feeding means comprises means for feeding said fourth web having longitudinal edges onto said yarn wound around said third web and said band; said second aligning means comprises means for controllably aligning said fourth web with one of said longitudinal edges of said fourth web parallel to and at a fixed and predetermined distance from one of said longitudinal edges of said band according to the desired height of said external fin in said second pile weatherstripping, said second controllably aligning means comprising means for engaging said fourth web and said wrapped band and indexing said fourth web with respect of said band thereby establishing said height of said external fin in said second weatherstrip; said attaching means includes means for attaching different ones of said backing strips to different ones of said second and fourth webs, said yarn, and said first and third webs, respectively, at different ones of said longitudinal edges of said band; and said slitting means includes means for cutting said yarn without cutting any of said webs to provide thereby a pair of pile weatherstrips, each having a different one of said first and third webs providing an internal fin of predetermined height and a different one of said second and fourth webs providing an external fin of predetermined height in precise controllably predetermined relationship with the height of said rows of said pile from the ones of said backing strips to which they are attached.
