Claims
- 1. A portable pressure control valve for use in conjunction with a stationary hydrant for automatically precisely regulating the downstream pressure of a fluid flowing from said hydrant at a predetermined pressure level, comprising:
- a main valve housing, including a main flow passage;
- a main piston, adjustably positioned within said main flow passage to precisely regulate the flow of fluid therethrough;
- a control passage for maintaining fluid under pressure for adjusting the position of said main piston; and a pilot valve, responsive to said downstrem pressure of said fluid for automatically regulating the pressure of the fluid in said control passage to precisely regulate said downstream pressure at said predetermined pressure level, said pilot valve located within said main valve housing to protect said pilot valve from damage.
- 2. A pressure control valve as defined in claim 1 additionally comprising:
- a first passageway for supplying high pressure fluid to said control passage, said first passageway located entirely within said main valve housing; and
- a second passageway located entirely within said main valve housing for supplying fluid from said control passage to adjust the position of said main piston at a controlled rate.
- 3. A pressure control valve as defined in claim 1 wherein said main valve housing is in the form of an elbow, so that the inlet and outlet of said main flow passage are approximately perpendicular, wherein said main piston is adjustably positioned along an axis perpendicular to the axis of said inlet, and wherein said pilot valve is adjustably positioned along an axis perpendicular to the axis of said inlet, to facilitate the location of said pilot valve within said main valve housing.
- 4. A pressure control valve for use in conjunction with a hydrant for controlling the downstream pressure of a fluid flowing from said hydrant, comprising:
- a main valve housing, including a main flow passage;
- a main piston, adjustably positioned within said main flow passage to control the flow of fluid therethrough;
- a control passage for maintaining fluid under pressure for adjusting the position of said main piston;
- a pilot valve, responsive to said downstream pressure of said fluid for controlling the pressure of the fluid in said control passage, said pilot valve located within said main valve housing to protect said pilot valve from damage;
- a first orifice for supplying high pressure fluid to said control passage, said orifice located within said main valve housing;
- a second orifice located within said main valve housing for supplying fluid from said control passage to adjust the position of said main piston at a controlled rate; and
- a variable orifice, located within said main valve housing, for supplying fluid from said control passage to adjust the position of said main piston, the size of said variable orifice being controlled by the position of said main piston to change the rate of adjustment of said piston in accordance with changes in the position of said main piston.
- 5. A pressure control valve for use in conjunction with a hydrant for controlling the downstream pressure of a fluid flowing from said hydrant, comprising:
- a main valve housing, including a main flow passage;
- a main piston, adjustably positioned within said main flow passage to control the flow of fluid therethrough;
- a control passage for maintaining fluid under pressure for adjusting the position of said main piston;
- a pilot valve, responsive to said downstream pressure of said fluid for controlling the pressure of the fluid in said control passage, said pilot valve located within said main valve housing to protect said pilot valve from damage; and
- a diaphragm for controlling the position of said pilot valve in response to said downstream pressure, said diaphragm located within said main valve housing.
- 6. A pressure control valve controlling the downstream pressure of a fluid, comprising:
- a main valve housing, including a main flow passage;
- a main piston adjustably positioned within said main flow passage to control the flow of fluid therethrough;
- means for controlling the position of said main piston in response to said downstream pressure; and
- means for changing the rate of operation of said piston controlling means in response to the position of said main piston within said main flow passage.
- 7. A pressure control valve as defined in claim 6 wherein said position controlling means comprises:
- an actuating chamber for maintaining fluid under pressure for adjusting the position of said piston;
- a control passage for maintaining fluid at a pressure which is responsive to said downstream prssure; and
- a valve connecting said actuating chamber with said control passage, said valve operating in response to the position of said main piston.
