Claims
- 1. The combination of a pipe or tube of a given outer diameter and a female fitting, for coupling to an end portion of said pipe or tube, said fitting comprising:
a tubular body having an inside diameter slightly larger than said given outside diameter and including a proximal section defining a opening to be engaged by said end portion of the pipe, and a distal section; said proximal section having an outer male threaded region tapering down toward said opening; said region having at least one slot running axially from said opening toward said distal section; a nut having an inner female thread matingly commensurate with said male thread; and a first sealing ring made from substantially incompressible material insertable into said opening.
- 2. The combination of claim 1, said outer male threaded region having a minimal threaded diameter and a tapering angle;
wherein the female thread of said nut has the same tapering angle as the male thread of said proximal section.
- 3. The combination of claim 2, wherein said tapering angle in within a range of approximately 2° to 5°.
- 4. The combination of claim 2 which further comprises a circular groove in said inside region between said barrier and at least one slot and a sleeving O-ring nested therein.
- 5. The combination of claim 1, wherein said male and female threads are of a translating thread type.
- 6. The combination of claim 5, wherein said translating thread type is selected from a group consisting of American Modified Square Thread; American Standard Acme General Purpose Thread, American Standard 29-Degree Steel Thread and 29-Degree Worm Thread.
- 7. The combination of claim 1, wherein said male thread has a small end minor diameter and a first axial length;
said female thread has a small end major diameter and a second axial length; and said minor diameter is slightly smaller than said major diameter.
- 8. The combination of claim 7, which further comprises a reinforcing outer flange projecting radially from said from said distal section.
- 9. The combination of claim 8, wherein said flange has a proximal face defining a maximum excursion point for the nut.
- 10. The combination of claim 1, wherein said first sealing ring is made from substantially the same material as said pipe and said fitting.
- 11. The combination of claim 1, wherein said first sealing is nested in a first circumferential channel in an outer surface of said end portion.
- 12. The combination of claim 11, which further comprises a second sealing ring of resilient material situated proximate to said first sealing ring.
- 13. The combination of a pipe or tube of a given outer diameter and a female fitting, for coupling to an end portion of said pipe or tube, said fitting comprising:
a tubular body having an inside diameter slightly larger than said given outside diameter and including a proximal section defining a opening to be engaged by said end portion of the pipe, and a distal section; said proximal section having an outer male threaded region tapering down toward said opening, said region having a minimal threaded diameter and a tapering angle; said region having at least one slot running axially from said opening toward said distal section; and a nut having an inner female thread matingly commensurate with said male thread; and wherein an outer surface area of said pipe or tube engaged by said tubular body is scored with at least one groove shaped and dimensioned to accept at least one sealing ring, wherein said ring is made from incompressible material.
- 14. A process for forming a reusable pipe fitting which comprises the steps of:
scoring a pair of circumferential channels into the outer surface of an end portion of a pipe or tube having a given outside diameter and being made from a given material; nesting a first and a second sealing rings within said channels; slipping a hex nut over said end of pipe or tube; inserting said pipe or tube into a threaded tubular body having an inside diameter slightly larger than said given outside diameter; screwing said hex nut over said tubular body.
- 15. The process of claim 14, wherein said scoring comprises:
using a pipe scoring tool having means to cut a pair of spaced apart, parallel circular channels around said end of pipe or tube.
- 16. The process of claim 14, wherein said nesting comprises:
selecting said first sealing ring made of a high temperature rubber; and selecting said second sealing ring made of said given material.
- 17. The process of claim 16, wherein said nesting comprises placing said second sealing ring into a first of said pair of channels closer to said end of pipe or tube.
