Claims
- 1. A system for lifting and supporting a string of downwardly extending pipe from a floating surface vessel, the system comprising a floating surface vessel having a hull; a platform pivotally connected to the hull of the surface vessel about two horizontal, transverse axes of rotation, the platform having a central opening therethrough;
- main vertical support means, secured to the platform and arranged about the central opening and designed to vertically support a downwardly extending pipe;
- lateral holding means supported from the platform and arranged about the center line of the central opening but located substantially not higher than the bottom of the hull of the surface vessel, and so designed to contact a pipe supported by the main support means so that lateral movement is limited in the portion of the pipe extending between the lateral holding means are the main support means without providing any substantial vertical support for the pipe.
- 2. A system for lifting and supporting a string of downwardly extending pipe from a floating surface vessel, the system comprising a floating surface vessel, a platform pivotally connected to the surface vessel about two horizontal, transverse axes of rotation, the platform having a central opening therethrough;
- first main support means, secured to the platform and arranged about the central opening and designed to vertically support a downwardly extending pipe;
- second main support means, vertically movably secured to the platform and arranged about a central opening in line with the central opening through the platform, the second main support means being movable vertically over a range between a first position below the platform and a second lower position so as to vertically support a downwardly extending pipe from any position over its range and while moving; and
- lateral holding means supported from the platform and arranged about the center line of the first and second central openings but located below the second lower position of the second support and so designed that lateral movement of pipe supported by either of the main support means is limited in the portion of the pipe between the main support means supporting the pipe and the holding means.
- 3. A system for lifting and supporting a string of downwardly extending pipe from a surface vessel, the system comprising a platform, pivotally connected to a surface vessel about two horizontal, transverse axes of rotation, the platform having a central opening therethrough;
- a hoist carriage, reciprocally, vertically, movably supported by the platform and having a central opening therethrough, in line with the central opening of the platform;
- first pipestring support means and second pipestring support means secured to the platform and hoist carriage respectively, and so arranged thereon that the first and second support means are in close-coupled relationship when the hoist carriage is in a position immediately adjacent the platform; each pipestring support means being capable of vertically suppoting a string of downwardly extending pipe;
- a plurality of vertically separated lateral holding means for alternately providing lateral support as the pipestring moves vertically relative to the vessel, each lateral holding means being vertically fixedly supported from the platform, and comprising a plurality of laterally holding elements, each element being pivotally connected to the platform, capable of pivoting about a vertical axis such that the lateral holding elements can move radially toward and away from the space directly beneath the central openings and provide substantially continuous lateral restraint to movement by a pipestring supported by the pipestring support means;
- whereby a pipestring is vertically moved between the surface vessel and the ocean floor by being alternately engaged and supported by the first and second support means, on complementary sets of close-coupled surfaces on the segments of the pipestring.
- 4. The system of claim 2 comprising a plurality of lateral holding means for alternately providing lateral holding as the pipestring moves vertically relative to the vessel.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein the plurality of lateral holding means are supported from the platform and are each vertically fixed relative to each other and to the platform.
- 6. The system of claim 5 wherein the plurality of lateral holding means are separated by a distance determined by the size of interfering objects on the pipestring.
- 7. The system of claim 1 comprising in addition hydraulic actuating means for alternately moving in a radial direction the lateral holding elements on each of two, vertically separated, lateral holding means.
- 8. The system of claim 4 wherein the two lateral holding means are vertically movable relative to the platform, each being independently capable of moving together with the pipestring.
- 9. The system of claim 8 wherein the lateral holding means are further movable relative to the pipestring and so juxtaposed relative to the pipestring and the hoist carriage, so as to permit relative movement without interfering with the carriage and pipestring.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the lateral holding means comprises pivotable support elements capable of being pivoted about the pipestring to the lateral holding position, and to a second position that is not interfering with movement relative to the pipestring and carriage.
- 11. The system of claim 1 comprising leveling means to maintain the carriage horizontally level relative to the platform as the carriage moves vertically relative to the platform.
- 12. The system of claim 1 or 2 wherein the lateral holding means are located at a substantial distance below the main support means, the main support means being located at the upper portion of the hull.
