Claims
- 1. A pipeline vehicle comprising a plurality of linked modules including a power module and a control module, the plurality of linked modules forming a self powered and self controlled train for traveling within a pipeline, each of the modules being supported and spaced from the next in the train by one of a plurality of intermediate and wheeled carriages flexible relative to a center line of the pipeline to allow serpentine travel through the pipeline.
- 2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein each wheeled carriage is identical and each includes a suspension device with spring loaded wheels configured to contact the inner wall of the pipeline.
- 3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 2, wherein the suspension device includes a plurality of spring loaded arms terminated by the wheels.
- 4. A vehicle as claimed in claim 3, wherein slider means are attached to the arms to assist in centralizing the carriage.
- 5. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein each carriage includes a central shaft to allow linked modules to axially rotate relative to the carriage.
- 6. A vehicle as claimed in claim 2, wherein each carriage includes a central shaft to allow linked modules to axially rotate relative to the carriage.
- 7. A vehicle as claimed in claim 3, wherein each carriage includes a central shaft to allow linked modules to axially rotate relative to the carriage.
- 8. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, including electrical coupling means at each end of the carriages to allow linked modules to be electrically interconnected with each other via the carriages.
- 9. A vehicle as claimed in claim 2, including electrical coupling means at each end of the carriages to allow linked modules to be electrically interconnected with each other via the carriages.
- 10. A vehicle as claimed in claim 3, including electrical coupling means at each end of the carriages to allow linked modules to be electrically interconnected with each other via the carriages.
- 11. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the control module includes onboard computer means to detect and control the operation of the vehicle via interconnections through the carriages and wherein the computer means is connected to a plurality of sensors via interface means, and the computer means is configured to automatically determine firstly when a pipe junction has been reached, secondly to determine the orientation of the junction and thirdly to determine the amount of axial rotation and forward movement required to align the module capable of carrying out the operation on the pipeline.
- 12. A vehicle as claimed in claim 11, wherein the plurality of linked modules include a module which is configured to drill an aperture in the region of the junction.
- 13. A vehicle as claimed in claim 11, wherein a module is configured to detect a guide device at the junction.
- 14. A vehicle as claimed in claim 11, wherein the plurality of linked modules include a module which is configured to fuse a joint in a pipe liner.
