Claims
- 1. Apparatus for assembling a ring in a groove, comprising means for positioning a member having a circumferential groove to locate said groove in a position to receive a ring, optic switch means proximate said position for directing a light beam tangentially through a partial circumferential portion of said groove at said position in a manner to pass unobstructed through said portion of said groove when a ring is not present therein and to be interrupted by a ring from passing through said groove when a ring is present therein, said optic switch means thereby determining whether a ring is positioned in said groove, and ring moving means for moving a ring relative to said position for placement in said groove in response to a determination that a ring is not present in said groove and for terminating movement of a ring to said position in response to a determination that a ring is present in said groove.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said optic switch means is disposed in a plane coincident with a plane defined by said groove proximate said position so as to direct the light beam tangentially relative to a partal circumferential region of the groove.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said optic switch means comprises first and second fiber optic members aligned in a direction that passes tangentially through the groove relative to its circumference.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said ring moving means includes motor means for moving a ring relative to said position for placement in said groove and control means for controlling actuation/deactuation of said motor means, said optic switch means providing a signal to said control means to actuate said motor means when a ring is not present in said groove and another signal to deactuate said motor means when a ring is present in said groove.
- 5. Apparatus for assembling a ring on each of successive pistons, comprising a piston ringing station having means for locating each successive piston in a manner to position a circumferential piston groove in a predetermined ring-receiving position, and fiber optic switch means proximate the piston locating means and a side of said groove for directing a light beam tangentially through a partial circumferential portion of the piston groove in a manner to pass unobstructed through said portion of said groove and be received without reflection by said fiber optic switch means on an opposite side of said groove when a ring is not present therein and to be interrupted by a ring from passing through said portion of said groove when a ring is present therein, said fiber optic means thereby determining whether a ring is positioned in the piston groove, said switch means providing a signal to feed a ring to said piston groove when a ring is determined not to be present in said groove and to stop feeding of a ring to said piston groove when a ring is determined to be present in said piston groove.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said fiber optic switch means is disposed in a plane coincident with a plane defined by said groove proximate said position so as to direct the light beam tangentially relative to a partial circumferential region of the piston groove.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 including ring moving means for moving a ring relative to said position for placement in said groove, said ring moving means including motor means for feeding a ring relative to said position for placement in said groove and control means for controlling actuation/deactuation of said motor means, said fiber optic switch means providing a signal to said control means to actuate said motor means when a ring is present is said groove and another signal to deactuate said motor means when a ring is present in said groove.
