Claims
- 1. A device adapted to be mounted on a ski, said device comprising:
- (a) a first maintenance element;
- (b) a pivotable plate, adapted to be aligned, misaligned, and realigned with said ski and adapted to pivot around an axis substantially perpendicular to said ski while remaining secured to said ski comprising a second maintenance element; wherein said first maintenance element and said pivotable plate are each adapted to be mounted on a ski such that said first maintenance element and said second maintenance element may serve to securely maintain the ends of a ski boot mounted on said ski while laterally releasing said boot when said boot is subjected to a torsional force relative to said ski;
- (c) braking assembly comprising:
- (i) at least one braking element adapted to shift between an active and an inactive position, said at least one braking element being normally biased to said active position;
- (ii) at least one boot-sensitive element adapted to shift said at least one braking element to said inactive position as said boot is mounted on said ski;
- (d) means for mounting said at least one braking element to said ski, whereby said at least one braking element is not mounted on said pivotable plate; and
- (e) means for realigning said pivotable plate upon release of said boot.
- 2. The device as defined by claim 1 wherein each of said braking assembly and said pivotable plate is adapted to be mounted adjacent to one another on a ski such that a portion of said pivotable plate cooperates with a first portion of said braking assembly when said boot has been released from said ski.
- 3. The device as defined by claim 2 wherein each of said first maintenance element, said pivotable plate, said braking assembly and said realigning means is mounted on said ski.
- 4. The device as defined by claim 3 wherein said realigning means further comprises stopping means for limiting rotation of said pivotable plate about said axis.
- 5. The device as defined by claim 1 wherein said at least one braking element and said at least one boot-sensitive element together form a U-shaped stirrup member, wherein said at least one braking element comprises two respective ends of said U-shaped stirrup member, and wherein said means for realigning comprises at least a portion of said boot-sensitive element.
- 6. The device as defined by claim 5 wherein said stirrup member is adapted to be pivotably mounted near each of its said ends on opposite lateral sides of said ski.
- 7. The device as defined by claim 6 wherein said pivotable plate comprises two sides and said second maintenance element is connected to said pivotable plate by means of two lateral arms connecting the respective sides of said pivotable plate and said second maintenance element, and said means for realigning further comprises at least a portion of said two lateral arms.
- 8. The device as defined by claim 7 wherein said U-shaped stirrup member comprises a pedal adapted to be arranged between each of said arms when said at least one braking element is in said active position to thereby comprise a stopping means for said pivotable plate and so as to realign said pivotable plate.
- 9. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said at least one braking element and said boot-sensitive element are coextensive; wherein said pivotable plate comprises two sides and said second maintenance element is connected to said pivotable plate by means of two lateral arms connecting the respective sides of said pivotable plate and extending in a rearward direction from said pivotable plate; wherein at least a portion of said at least one boot-sensitive element extends in a forward direction from said means for mounting said at least one braking element; and wherein said at least a portion of said at least one boot-sensitive element and said two lateral arms comprise said means for realigning said pivotable plate.
- 10. The device as defined in claim 9 wherein said at least one boot-sensitive element is positioned between said two lateral arms when said at least one braking element is in said active position.
- 11. The device as defined in claim 10 wherein said two lateral arms converge toward a longitudinal axis and said pivotable plate is realigned as said at least one brake element shifts to said active position, wherein said at least one bootsensitive element abuts said two lateral arms as said at least one brake element shifts to said active position.
- 12. The device as defined in claim 1 further comprising a base adapted to be integrally mounted on a ski upper surface, wherein said at least one braking element is mounted to said base by said means for mounting said at least one braking element.
