Claims
- 1. A method of creating a pixel clock for a scanner of the type having a radiant energy source and a rotating spinner mirror which is responsible for redirecting a light beam directed along its spinner axis to a partially cylindric drum support spaced a given distance from the axis, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a spinner motor and connected spinner mirror and rotating the spinner mirror at a constant velocity using said spinner motor;
- providing an encoding means at said spinner motor for encoding the motion of said spinner motor to create a first pulse train having a first frequency directly related to said velocity of said spinner mirror;
- multiplying said first pulse train by a given constant to create a second pulse train having a second frequency higher than said first frequency; and
- using said second pulse train as a pixel clock to shift image data to a radiant energy source to image a media sheet having a photosensitive surface.
- 2. A method as defined in claim 1 further characterized in that the step of multiplying the first pulse train by a given constant to create a second pulse train having a second frequency higher than that of said first pulse train includes matching the phase of the second pulse train with that of the first pulse train.
- 3. A method as defined in claim 1 further characterized in that said step of multiplying said first pulse train by a given constant is performed by providing a phase locked loop circuit having a phase detector having two inputs and one output and a voltage controlled oscillator having an input and an output, supplying said first pulse train to one of said inputs of said phase detector, supplying said one output of said phase detector to the input of said voltage controlled oscillator, dividing the output of said voltage controlled oscillator by said given constant, and providing the result of said division to the other of said two inputs of said phase detector.
- 4. A method as defined in claim 1 further characterized by dividing said second pulse train by a given number to produce a third pulse train having a frequency different from that of said second pulse train, and using said third pulse train in place of said second pulse train as said pixel clock.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 4 further characterized by accommodating the imaging of said media sheet at any one of a number of different selectable levels of resolution by driving said spinner mirror at a constant velocity which is different for each of said different levels of resolution, and in said step of dividing said second pulse train by a given number using a different value of said given number for each of said levels of resolution.
- 6. A method as defined in claim 5 further characterized by providing along with a selected level of resolution a given spot size to be projected for that resolution level and altering the spot size in accordance with the resolution level selected.
- 7. A method as defined in claim 1 further characterized by providing a linear position drive motor and using the linear position drive motor to rotate a lead screw to position the spinner mirror along the central axis of said drum support; and
- driving the linear position drive motor using a pulse train having a frequency directly related to said first pulse train.
- 8. A method as defined in claim 7 further characterized by said step of driving the linear position drive motor including providing a differential data accumulator in the form of a summation circuit and inputting into said summation circuit a constant value and a value which is released from a clock register having a clock rate directly related to said first frequency of said first pulse train.
- 9. A system creating a pixel clock for clocking image data to a scanner of the type having a rotating spinner mirror which is responsible for re-directing a light beam directed along its spinner axis to a partially cylindric drum support spaced a given distance from the axis to expose an image on a media sheet having a photosensitive surface at a selected one of a number of different available resolutions, said system comprising:
- spinner motor means including a connected spinner mirror for rotating the spinner mirror at a constant velocity;
- encoding means located at said spinner motor for encoding the motion of said spinner mirror to create a first pulse train having a first frequency;
- means for multiplying said first frequency by a given constant to create a second pulse train having a second frequency substantially higher than said first frequency; and
- means for using said second pulse train directly or in an altered state, depending upon the selected one of said available resolutions used, as a pixel clock to shift image data to a radiant energy source to image said media sheet.

This application is a divisional application of Ser. No. 08/112,612, filed Sep. 7, 1993; now U.S. Pat. No. 5,619,266. The present invention relates to co-pending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 07/839,398, filed in the name of Alan Menard, et al. on Feb. 20, 1992, and entitled PLOTTER DRUM AND METHODS OF FABRICATION AND ALIGNMENT THEREFOR, which application being commonly assigned with the present invention, and relates also to copending U.S. application Ser. No. 08/071,567, filed on Jun. 1, 1993 in the name of Wolfson, et al., and titled SYSTEM FOR HANDLING CURVED FORM MEDIA AND CASSETTE THEREFOR.
