Claims
- 1. A sailboard hull having an arrangement for attaching foot straps and a sail mast attachment arrangement, said sailboard hull including
a downwardly curved or angled lower surface to reach a maximum transverse angle of 10° or greater at the edges such that the edges of the board are lower than the centerline of the board by at least three-quarters of an inch or 0.03 time the maximum width of the hull, whichever is less whereby the lift to drag ratio of the hull is reduced.
- 2. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 1, wherein a portion of said curved or angled surface includes at least one of a plurality of pairs of winglets, wing grids, a pair of asymmetric fins, a plurality of pairs of fins of symmetric or asymmetric form, spaced fences, a ventilated step, a surface having a downward curvature in a front to back direction and a cambered surface.
- 3. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 2, including a streamlined pair of winglets angled downwardly at an angle in a range of 12° to 30°.
- 4. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 3, wherein a rear portion of said winglets is angled downward in a front to back direction.
- 5. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 3, wherein the bottoms of said winglets extends at least 1.5 inches below a centerline of said hull.
- 6. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 5, wherein a trailing edge of said winglets are tapered to reduce drag at low speed.
- 7. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 3, wherein said winglets are faired into sides of said hull.
- 8. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 3, wherein said winglets include a step at the position near a front foot strap.
- 9. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 2, wherein said plurality of pairs of winglets are progressively angled downwardly from front to back of said hull at transverse angles from 30° to 90°.
- 10. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 9, wherein said winglets form a wing grid and further including a structure enclosing tips of some of said winglets.
- 11. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 1, wherein downwardly angled portions of said bottom surface are angled inwardly in a front to back direction of said hull.
- 12. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 2, wherein said spaced fences are angled inwardly in a front to back direction of said hull.
- 13. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 2, wherein said fences have inside and outside surfaces at different transverse angles.
- 14. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 13, wherein said fences provide displacement lift and are streamlined to reduce low speed drag and wherein bottom edges of said fences are narrow and present a lower planing surface.
- 15. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 2 including means for stabilizing planing angle of attack.
- 16. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 15, wherein said means for stabilizing a planing angle includes a step.
- 17. A sailboard hull as recited in claim 15, wherein said means for stabilizing a planing angle includes a portion of said cambered surface.
- 18. A sailboard apparatus having a hull, an arrangement for attaching foot straps including a front foot strap and a sail mast attachment arrangement, said sailboard hull having an effective width at a location between said sail mast attachment arrangement and said arrangement for attaching said front foot strap which is at least 2.0 times the effective width of the planing surface of said hull 20 cm from the rear of said hull.
- 19. A sailboard apparatus as recited in claim 18 wherein part of the sides of said hull form a step.
- 20. A sailboard apparatus as recited in claim 18 wherein effective width at a location between said sail mast attachment arrangement and said arrangement for attaching said front foot strap is at least 2.2 times the effective width of the planing surface of said hull 20 cm from the rear of said hull.
