Claims
- 1. A method of producing a plasma comprising the steps of: providing a generator for generating microwaves in a preselected range; establishing an essentially non-resonant coupling of microwave energy between the microwave generator and the conductive terminal portion of a pipe having an open end, said coupling including a non-resonant cavity within said preselected range independently of a load on said coupling, so that said open end radiates a portion of said microwave electromagnetic energy;
- feeding gas to said pipe so that gas leaves the pipe through said open end; and
- initiating a plasma formation at said open end of the pipe, whereby said microwave energy is then coupled to the plasma for sustaining the same and said portion of the microwave energy is no longer radiated.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said field has a frequency lying in the range 200 MHz to 10,000 MHz.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein said open end end of the pipe is at atmospheric pressure.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein said step of establishing an essentially non-resonant coupling comprises inserting between said generator and said pipe an impedance matching structure adapted to said plasma.
- 5. A plasma generator comprising:
- a pipe having an open end and being at least partially electrically conductive about said end;
- a high frequency energy generator operating in a preselected microwave range;
- essentially non-resonant microwave coupling means for coupling microwave electromagnetic energy from the high frequency generator to the pipe in the vicinity of said open end thereof, said coupling including a cavity which does not resonate within said preselected range independently of a load on the coupling; so as to have said open end radiating a portion of said microwave electromagnetic energy, in the absence of ionized gas at said open end; and
- means for feeding gas to the pipe so that the gas leaves the pipe through said open end and is converted to plasma by said microwave energy;
- said non-resonant microwave coupling transferring substantially all the energy from the generator to the gas without energy storage;
- whereby said electromagnetic energy is then coupled to the plasma for sustaining the same and said portion of the microwave energy is no longer radiated.
- 6. A plasma generator for generating a gas plasma flame, said generator comprising: an axially extending, electrically conductive pipe having an open end via which the gas escapes: a high frequency energy generator generating microwaves in a preselected range; an essentially non-resonant electromagnetic air gap coupling means for transferring substantially all the energy from the generator to the gas escaping from the pipe without energy storage, said coupling means including a coupling cavity which does not resonate within said preselected range independently of a load on the coupling, and being disposed around a portion of said pipe adjacent to its open end, and the air in the gap being at atmospheric pressure; an axially extending, electrically conductive sleeve disposed around said pipe and having a downstream end which is substantially level with said open end of the pipe, said pipe and said sleeve defining an annular chamber.
- 7. The plasma generator according to claim 6 wherein said pipe passes through an annular cavity before reaching said annular chamber, said cavity being delimited by an electrically conductive coaxial tube which is closed at its end nearest to said chamber by a partition which leaves an air gap, said tube co-operating electromagnetically with a surrounding electrically conductive sleeve, said tube and said sleeve surrounding it being connected to respective conductors of coaxial cable leading to said high frequency energy generator.
- 8. The plasma generator according to claim 7, wherein the upstream end of said chamber is closed by an electrically insulating plate through which the pipe passes.
- 9. The plasma generator according to claim 8, wherein the upstream end of said tube is closed by a wall through which the pipe passes and at a distance from the second insulating plate.
