Claims
- 1. A web of plastic bags, comprising:
mutually-connected individual bags each being attached to an adjacent one of said bags by a perforated tear line, said bags being opened along at least a portion of said tear line to form a flap defining an entry into each of said bags through which point-of-purchase items are insertable into said bags, said bags having a volume sufficient to contain a quantity of produce.
- 2. A web of bags according to claim 1 wherein respective width and height dimensions of said bags measured in inches are in a range of about 8×10 to about 16×24.
- 3. A web of bags according to claim 1, wherein respective width and height dimensions of said bags measured in inches are in a range of about 10×14 to about 12×20.
- 4. A web of bags according to claim 1, wherein a wall thickness of said bags does not exceed about 1.4 mils.
- 5. A web of bags according to claim 1, wherein a wall thickness of said bags is in a range of about 0.35 mils to about 0.9 mils.
- 6. A web of bags according to claim 1, wherein said bags are wound on a dispensable supply roll.
- 7. A web of bags according to claim 1, wherein said produce includes at least one of fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices.
- 8. A web of pre-opened bags made of a plastic material in a condensed dispensing format through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable, said web comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first bag and said second bag, said first bag and said second bag each having an open ply and an attached ply, said open ply and said attached ply being sealed together at a sealing line at or about a seal end of said bag and having an insertion edge at the other end of said bag, said insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from said open ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line; and at least one of said at least partially separated insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag at least partially folded away from said tear line.
- 9. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein said open ply of said second bag includes an excess portion extending from said sealing line and having an excess edge, said excess portion being capable of extending to a position in which said excess edge is substantially flush with said tear line, said excess edge being at least partially separated from said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag.
- 10. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag forms a flap that defines an entry point into said first bag.
- 11. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 further comprising a visual indicator on one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said visual indicator denoting a place at about the center of said first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 12. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 further comprising a visual indicator line on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said indicator line denoting a place on the first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 13. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 further comprising a visual tape indicator on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said tape indicator denoting a place on the first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 14. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 in which said open ply of said first bag has a first color and said attached ply of said first bag has a second color that is different than said first color, wherein the said first and second colors together denote a place on said first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 15. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 further comprising a vent on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply, said vent allowing for the evacuation of air from between said open ply and said attached ply during the manufacturing of said web of pre-opened bags.
- 16. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein said open ply and said attached ply are each constructed of plastic film layers having thicknesses of between about 0.0003 inches to about 0.0015 inches.
- 17. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein each of said first bag and said second bag has a dimension between about 8″ w×10″ h and about 16″ w×24″ h.
- 18. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein each of said first bag and said second bag has a dimension between about 10″ w×14″ h and about 12″ w×20″ h.
- 19. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein said first and second bags are each a plastic material comprising high density polyethylene.
- 20. The web of pre-opened bags of claim 8 wherein said first and second bags are each a plastic material comprising low density polyethylene.
- 21. A web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first and said second bags, each said first bag and said second bag having an open ply and an attached ply, an insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and an insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line, at least one of said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag are at least partially folded away from said tear line; and a storage form for containing at least said first and second bags, said storage form including a supply roll and a dispensing rack, at least said first and second bags being wound around said supply roll, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said dispensing rack to rotate about said axis, said storage form having a structure which provides tension against the rotation of said supply roll about said axis and the dispensing of bags from said storage form, while allowing the rotation of said supply roll, when at least one of said first bag and said second bag is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 22. A web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first and said second bags, each said first bag and said second bag having an open ply and an attached ply, an insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and an insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line, at least one of said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag are at least partially folded away from said tear line; a storage form for containing at least said first and second bags, said storage form including a supply roll, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock that engages said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis; and at least said first and second bags being wound around said supply roll, said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis of said supply roll when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 23. A web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first and said second bags, each said first bag and said second bag having an open ply and an attached ply, an insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and an insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line, at least one of said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag are at least partially folded away from said tear line; a storage form for containing at least said first and second bags, said storage form including a supply roll, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock having a rolled inside surface, a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from said rolled inside surface and engaging said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis; and at least said first and second bags being wound around said supply roll, said ribs of said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis of said supply roll when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 24. A web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first and said second bags, each said first bag and said second bag having an open ply and an attached ply, an insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and an insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line, at least one of said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag at least partially folded away from said tear line; and a storage form for containing at least said first and second bags, said storage form including a supply roll and a ratcheting mechanism on said storage form, said supply roll having an axis, said ratcheting mechanism increasing the tension on said supply roll against the dispensing of bags from said storage form and allowing said roll to rotate about its axis when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 25. A web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form through which point-of-purchase items can be normally insertable comprising:
a first bag connected to at least a second bag at a tear line across the width of said first bag and said second bag, said first bag and said second bag each having an open ply and an attached ply, said open ply and said attached ply being sealed together at a sealing line at or about a seal end of said bag and having an insertion edge at the other end of said bag, said insertion edge of said attached ply of said first bag adjacent said tear line and said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being at least partially separated from said open ply of said second bag, said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag being capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line; at least one of said at least partially separated insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag and said open ply of said second bag at least partially folded away from said tear line; a storage form for containing at least said first and second bags, said storage form including a supply roll and a dispensing rack, at least said first and second bags being wound around said supply roll, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said dispensing rack to rotate about said axis, said storage form having a structure that provides tension against the rotation of said supply roll about said axis and the dispensing of bags from said storage form, while allowing the rotation of said supply roll when at least one of said first bag and said second bag is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 26. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said open ply of said second bag includes an excess portion extending from said sealing line and having an excess edge, said excess portion being capable of extending to a position in which said excess edge is substantially flush with said tear line, said excess edge being at least partially separated from said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag.
- 27. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said insertion edge of said open ply of said first bag forms a flap that defines an entry point into said first bag.
- 28. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 further comprising a visual indicator on one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said visual indicator denoting a place at about the center of said first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 29. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 further comprising a visual indicator line on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said indicator line denoting a place on the first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 30. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 further comprising a visual tape indicator on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply of said first bag, said tape indicator denoting a place on said first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags
- 31. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 in which said open ply of said first bag has a first color and said attached ply of said first bag has a second color that is different than said first color, wherein the said first and second colors together denote a place on said first bag that can be pulled to further open said open ply and said attached ply apart from each other as said first bag is being dispensed from said web of pre-opened bags.
- 32. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 further comprising a vent on at least one of said open ply and said attached ply, said vent allowing for the evacuation of air from between said open ply and said attached ply during the manufacturing of said web of pre-opened bags.
- 33. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said open ply and said attached ply are each constructed of plastic film layers having thicknesses of between about 0.0003 inches to about 0.0015 inches.
- 34. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein each said first bag and said second bag has a dimension between about 8″ w×10″ h and about 16″ w×24″ h.
- 35. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein each said first bag and said second bag has a dimension between about 10″ w×14″ h and about 12″ w×20″ h.
- 36. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said storage form includes a locking device to provide tension against the rotation of said supply roll about said axis.
- 37. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said storage form includes a core lock to provide tension against the rotation of said supply roll about said axis.
- 38. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said storage form includes a core lock having a rolled inside surface, a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from said rolled inside surface and engaging said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis; said ribs of said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 39. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said storage form includes a ratcheting mechanism to provide tension against the rotation of said supply roll about said axis.
- 40. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said first and second bags each comprise a high density polyethylene material.
- 41. The web of pre-opened bags contained on a storage form of claim 25 wherein said first and second bags each comprise a low density polyethylene material.
- 42. A storage form for containing a web of pre-opened bags through which point-of-purchase items are insertable comprising:
a web of pre-opened bags, each of said bags being connected to at least one additional bag at a tear line, each of said bags having an open ply and an attached ply; each said open ply and said attached ply having an insertion edge; and said storage form being capable of allowing at least one of said bags to be pulled to produce tension to at least partially draw the insertion edge of an open ply away from an insertion edge of an attached ply to define an entry into the bag that is being pulled before the bag that is being pulled breaks off from the web of pre-opened bags.
- 43. The storage form of claim 42 further comprising a ratcheting mechanism for increasing the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 44. The storage form of claim 42 wherein said web of pre-opened bags is wound around a supply roll and said storage form includes a locking device on said supply roll for increasing the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 45. The storage form of claim 42 wherein said web of pre-opened bags is wound around a supply roll that is tightly mounted on said storage form to increase the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 46. The storage form of claim 42 further comprising a supply roll on which said web of pre-opened bags is wound, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock that engages said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis, said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis of said supply roll when at least one of said bags is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 47. The storage form of claim 42 further comprising a supply roll on which said web of pre-opened bags is wound, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock having a rolled inside surface, a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from said rolled inside surface and engaging said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis, said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis when at least one of said bags is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 48. A storage form for containing a web of pre-opened bags through which point-of-purchase items are insertable comprising:
a web of pre-opened bags, each of said bags being connected to at least one additional bag at a tear line, each of said bags having an open ply and an attached ply; each said open ply and said attached ply having an insertion edge that is capable of extending to a position that is substantially flush with said tear line; and said storage form being capable of increasing the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled to further move the insertion edge of its open ply away from being flush with said tear line to further open one of said bags as said bag is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 49. The storage form of claim 48 further comprising a ratcheting mechanism for increasing the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 50. The storage form of claim 48 wherein said web of pre-opened bags is wound around a supply roll and said storage form includes a locking device on said supply roll for increasing the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 51. The storage form of claim 48 wherein said web of pre-opened bags is wound around a supply roll that is tightly mounted on said storage form to increase the tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form when at least one of said bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 52. The storage form of claim 48 further comprising a supply roll on which said web of pre-opened bags is wound, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock that engages said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis, said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis of said supply roll when at least one of said bags is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 53. The storage form of claim 48 further comprising a supply roll on which said web of pre-opened bags is wound, a dispensing rack, and at least one core lock having a rolled inside surface, a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from said rolled inside surface and engaging said dispensing rack, said supply roll having an axis and being positioned on said core lock to rotate with said core lock about said axis, said core lock providing tension against the dispensing of bags from said storage form by rotating on said dispensing rack with said supply roll about said axis when at least one of said bags is being dispensed from said storage form.
- 54. A method of packaging point-of-purchase items, comprising the steps of:
producing bags as a continuous web, each of said bags being separated from an adjacent bag by a perforated tear line which extends through the web of bags crosswise to a length of the continuous web of bags, each of said bags being sealed along a sealing line adjacent to the perforated tear line, such that when a particular bag is removed from the continuous web of bags, it can suitably retain contents placed therein; breaking said perforation line on one side of said continuous web, while retaining at least a partial integrity of said perforation tear line on a remaining side of said web such that a flap defining an entry to each of said bags is formed prior to use; and loading the point-of-purchase items into at least one of said bags through said entry prior to removal of said at least one bag from a remainder of said web.
- 55. A method according to claim 54, wherein said continuous web is comprised of thermoplastic tubing, and said step of producing includes heat sealing said tubing at selected intervals to thereby form said sealing line.
- 56. A method according to claim 54, wherein said point-of-purchase items include items provided by a vendor as a bulk commodity for selection and repackaging by a consumer.
- 57. A method according to claim 54, wherein said bulk commodity includes at least one of fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices.
- 58. A method according to claim 54 wherein respective width and height dimensions of said bags measured in inches are in a range of about 8×10 to about 16×24.
- 59. A method according to claim 54, wherein respective width and height dimensions of said bags measured in inches are in a range of about 10×14 to about 12×20.
- 60. A method according to claim 54, wherein a wall thickness of said bags does not exceed about 1.4 mils.
- 61. A method according to claim 54, wherein a wall thickness of said bags is in a range of about 0.35 mils to about 0.9 mils.
- 62. A method according to claim 54, further comprising unrolling said continuous web of bags from a dispensable supply roll prior to said step of loading.
- 63. A method of packaging point-of-purchase items comprising:
providing a web of pre-opened bags to a consumer at a point-of-purchase, each of the bags being separated from at least one additional bag by a tear line that extends through the web of pre-opened bags in a direction that is about normal to the length of the web of bags, each bag having an open ply and an attached ply, an insertion edge of the attached ply being adjacent the tear line, and an insertion edge of the open ply of each bag being at least partially separated from at least one ply of an additional bag; causing each of the bags to be sealed along a sealing line such that when a particular bag is removed from the web of pre-opened bags, it can retain contents placed therein; pulling one of the bags from the web of pre-opened bags at a location to produce tension to at least partially draw the insertion edge of an open ply away from an insertion edge of an attached ply to define an entry into the bag that is being pulled before the bag that is being pulled breaks off from the web of pre-opened bags; and breaking the bag that is being pulled from the web of pre-opened bags along one of the tear lines.
- 64. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising forming a flap with said insertion edge of said open ply to further define the entry into the bag that is being pulled and dispensed.
- 65. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing an excess portion having an excess edge on at least one bag that is capable of extending to a position in which said excess edge is substantially flush with the tear line and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled, at least one of the excess edge and the insertion edge of the open ply of the bag that is being pulled being at least partially folded away from the tear line.
- 66. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing a visual indicator on one of the open ply and attached ply of the bag that is being pulled, the visual indicator denoting a place at about the center of the bag that is being pulled which can be pulled to further open the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled apart from each other as the bag that is being pulled is being dispensed from the web of pre-opened bags.
- 67. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising:
providing a storage form for containing the web of pre-opened bags; winding the web of pre-opened bags around a supply roll of the storage form; providing a locking device on the supply roll of the storage form to increase tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form when at least one of the bags is pulled as it is being dispersed from the storage form.
- 68. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising:
providing a storage form for containing the web of pre-opened bags; winding the web of pre-opened bags around a supply roll of the storage form; mounting the supply roll on the storage form to increase tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form as said roll rotates when at least one of the bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from the storage form.
- 69. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising:
providing a storage form for containing the web of pre-opened bags, the storage form including a dispensing rack and at least one core lock that engage the dispensing rack; winding the web of pre-opened bags around a supply roll of the storage form, the supply roll having an axis; positioning the supply roll on the core lock to rotate with the core lock about the axis of the supply roll; and causing the core lock to provide tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form by rotating on the dispensing rack with the supply roll about the axis of the supply roll when at least one of the bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from the storage form.
- 70. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising:
providing a storage form for containing the web of pre-opened bags, the storage form including a dispensing rack and at least one core lock having a rolled inside surface, a plurality of ribs extending inwardly from the rolled inside surface of the core lock and engaging the dispensing rack; winding the web of pre-opened bags around a supply roll of the storage form, the supply roll having an axis; positioning the supply roll on the core lock to rotate with the core lock about the axis of the supply roll; and causing the ribs of the core lock to provide tension against the dispensing of bags from the storage form by rotating on the dispensing rack with the supply roll about the axis of the supply roll when at least one of the bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from the storage form.
- 71. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising:
providing a storage form for containing the web of pre-opened bags; winding the web of pre-opened bags around a supply roll of the storage form; providing a ratcheting mechanism on the storage form to increase tension on the supply roll against the dispensing of bags from the storage form and allow the roll to rotate when at least one of the bags is pulled as it is being dispensed from the storage form.
- 72. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing a visual indicator line on at least one of the open ply and attached ply of the bag that is being pulled, the visual indicator line denoting a place on the bag that is being pulled that can be pulled to further open the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled apart from each other as the bag that is being pulled is being dispensed from the web of pre-opened bags.
- 73. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing a visual tape indicator on at least one of the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled, the visual tape indicator denoting a place on the bag that is being pulled that can be pulled to further open the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled apart from each other as the bag that is being pulled is being dispensed from the web of pre-opened bags.
- 74. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing the open ply of the bag that is being pulled with a first color and providing the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled with a second color, the first color being different from the second color, wherein the first and second colors together denote a place on the bag that is being pulled that can be pulled to further open the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled apart from each other as the bag that is being pulled is being dispensed from the web of pre-opened bags.
- 75. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 further comprising providing a vent on at least one of the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled to allow for the evacuation of air from between the open ply and the attached ply of the bag that is being pulled during the manufacturing of the web of pre-opened bags.
- 76. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 wherein said web of pre-opened bags comprises a high density polyethylene material.
- 77. The method of packaging point-of-purchase items of claim 63 wherein said web of pre-opened bags comprises a low density polyethylene material.
