- 10. A plastic container system adapted for retaining a commodity during and after a thermal process, said system comprising:
a container having an engagement member that is exposed to elevated temperatures to form an intermediate engagement member having a predetermined diameter; and a closure member cooperatively engaging said plastic container, said closure member engaging said intermediate engagement member to form a hermetic seal, said closure member and said intermediate engagement member cooperating to require a first torque to remove said closure from said container before thermal processing and to require a second torque to remove said closure from said container after thermal processing, said first torque being substantially equal to said second torque.
- 11. The plastic container system of claim 10 wherein said intermediate engagement member is crystallized prior to thermal processing.
- 12. The plastic container system of claim 11 wherein said intermediate engagement member is annealed prior to thermal processing.
- 13. The plastic container system of claim 10 wherein said engagement member includes an engagement diameter and said intermediate engagement member includes an intermediate engagement diameter.
- 14. The plastic container system of claim 13 wherein said engagement diameter is greater than said intermediate engagement diameter.
- 15. The plastic container system of claim 13 wherein said intermediate engagement diameter is substantially similar to a finish diameter.
- 16. The plastic container system of claim 13 wherein said intermediate engagement diameter is within a predetermined range of a finish diameter.
- 17. A method for providing a thermally processed commodity within a plastic container, said method comprising:
providing a container having an initial finish section; exposing said initial finish section to thermal energy such that said initial finish sections shrinks to an intermediate finish section; dispensing a commodity within said container; engaging a closure with said intermediate finish section; and thermally processing the commodity within said container, said intermediate finish section having a diameter which remains within a predetermined range, whereby a finish section and said closure seal said container.
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein said exposing step includes inducing crystallization.
- 19. The method of claim 16 wherein said exposing step includes annealing.
- 20. The method of claim 16 wherein at least a portion of said finish section is crystallized to at least 30%.
- 21. A method of providing a thermally processed commodity retained within a plastic container, said method comprising:
providing a preform having an initial finish section; reforming said preform, thereby forming a preform having an intermediate finish section; molding said preform, thereby forming a container; dispensing a commodity within said container; engaging a closure with said intermediate finish section; and thermally processing the commodity within said container such that said intermediate finish section remains within a predetermined range, whereby a finish section and said closure seal said container.
- 22. A method for providing a thermally stable finish, said method comprising:
providing a finish section; reforming said finish section, which in part requires crystallizing at least a portion of said finish such that said finish has a finish dimension that shrinks to an intermediate finish dimension; annealing said crystallized finish such that said intermediate finish dimension conforms to a predetermined range.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein said crystallization is accomplished by a constrained process.
- 24. The method of claim 22 wherein said crystallization is accomplished by a free process.
- 25. The method of claim 23 wherein said finish is about 90° C.-150° C. at the time a constraining plug is removed in said constrained process.
- 26. The method of claim 23 wherein said a finish temperature at the time of removal of a constraining plug in said constrained process is about 5° C.-60° C. greater than an ultimate use temperature to which said finish is subsequently exposed.
