Claims
- 1. A plastic drink-through lid for an open top drink cup with a rim, said lid being of the type generally having a deck portion, an integral rim engaging portion, and an integral peripheral skirt; the improvement comprising a preformed, at least partially separated, fold-back tab formed within the deck portion adjacent but spaced in its entirety from the skirt to create a drink-through opening in the deck when folded back; a preformed hinge in the deck extending along the interior edge of the tab; the hinge lying about one-third the lid radius from the outside edge of the peripheral skirt;
an upstanding catch formed in the tab between the hinge and the rim engaging portion and extruding upwardly therefrom to a height which is higher than the deck and the rim engaging portion; and a recess formed in the deck immediately inwardly adjacent the hinge to receive the protrusion when the tab is folded back.
- 2. The lid of claim 1 wherein the lid is made of light gage, thermoformable plastic.
- 3. The lid of claim 2 wherein the deck is essentially flat.
- 4. The lid of claim 3 further including a first ridge formed on a side of the thumb catch and a second ridge formed on an upper portion of the recess to interact with the first ridge to lock the thumb catch in the recess.
- 5. The lid of claim 3 wherein the lid is a plug fit lid defined by an annular groove formed in the deck adjacent the skirt.
- 6. A plastic drink-through lid for an open-ended, rimmed drink cup, sized to be held in the hand, said lid comprising: a peripheral skirt, an inner deck and a raised annular outer deck surrounding the inner deck and raised relative thereto, a fold-back tab formed within the raised outer deck closely adjacent but spaced from the skirt to create a drink-though opening, a hinge formed in the inner deck immediately adjacent the interior edge of the tab; a raised catch formed in the tab and extending upwardly therefrom to a height greater than the height of the outer deck, and a locking recess formed in the inner deck immediately inwardly adjacent the hinge for receiving the raised catch; the hinge lying about one-third of the lid radius inboard of the skirt such that the entirety of the tab lies on one side of the lid center when folded back.
- 7. The lid of claim 6, wherein the lid is made of light gage, thermoformable plastic.
- 8. The lid of claim 7, further comprising:
a first locking ridge formed on an upper peripheral side of the thumb catch; and a second ridge formed on an upper portion of a central side of the recess complementary to the first ridge to retain the tab in a folded back position.
- 9. A method of activating a drink-through opening in a disposable cup lid of the type having a predefined tab near the periphery of the lid with a raised thumb catch formed integrally with the tab, a hinge at a rear edge of the tab less than about one-half of the lid radius from the periphery, and a catch-receiving recess immediately inwardly adjacent the hinge, comprising the steps of:
grasping a cup having a lid installed thereon; engaging the raised catch with a thumb on the hand grasping the cup; and rotating the catch and tab up and back to break the tab partially free of the lid material and fold the tab back about the hinge until the catch enters the recess.
- 10. The method described in claim 9 further including the step of continuing to push the catch and tab back to engage the catch with a locking feature on the lid.
