Claims
- 1. A monofilament reinforcing fiber comprised of a core that is a polyolefin that is at least partially enveloped by a sheath that is a copolymer of an olefin and at least one olefinically unsaturated comonomer selected from the group consisting of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate and vinyl ester.
- 2. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the olefin is ethylene.
- 3. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene or polyethylene.
- 4. The fiber of claim 2 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene or polyethylene.
- 5. The fiber of claim 4 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene.
- 6. The fiber of claim 5 wherein the polypropylene has a melt flow rate of about 4 to 20.
- 7. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the fiber has a denier of at least about 0.1 to at most about 12.
- 8. The fiber of claim 7 wherein the denier is at least about 1.
- 9. The fiber of claim 8 wherein the denier is at most about 8.
- 10. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the sheath completely envelops the core.
- 11. The fiber of claim 1 wherein the olefin is ethylene and the copolymer has at least about 0.1 percent by weight to at most about 50 percent by weight of the olefinically unsaturated comonomer.
- 12. The fiber of claim 11 wherein the olefinically unsaturated comonomer is acrylic acid.
- 13. A concrete article comprised of concrete having therein a monofilament reinforcing fiber comprised of a core that is a polyolefin, that is at least partially enveloped by a sheath, that is a copolymer of an olefin and at least one olefinically unsaturated comonomer selected from the group consisting of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate and vinyl ester.
- 14. The concrete article of claim 13 wherein the fiber is present in the article in an amount of about 0.01 to about 0.2 percent by volume.
- 15. The concrete article of claim 14 wherein the polyolefin is polypropylene and the olefin is ethylene and the comonomer is acrylic acid.
- 16. The concrete article of claim 15 wherein the copolymer has about at least about 0.1 percent to at most about 50 percent by weight of acrylic acid.
- 17. The concrete article of claim 15 wherein the fiber has a denier of about 0.1 to about 30.
- 18. The concrete article of claim 17 wherein the denier is at most about 12.
- 19. The concrete article of claim 18 wherein the denier is at least about 1.
- 20. The concrete article of claim 13 wherein the olefin is ethylene and the copolymer has at least about 0.1 percent to at most about 50 percent by weight of the olefinically unsaturated comonomer.
