Claims
- 1. A pallet, comprising:
an upper deck comprising a support material; an upper frame member supporting said upper deck; a plurality of foot members disposed in physical contact with said upper frame member; and a lower frame member disposed in physical contact with said plurality of foot members.
- 2. The pallet of claim 1, wherein an outer wall of each of said foot members further comprises a bend disposed therein, said bend being configured to engage a lip disposed at an edge of said upper frame member.
- 3. The pallet of claim 1 further comprising a foam material disposed within each of said foot members.
- 4. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said foot members are integrally formed with said upper frame member.
- 5. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said foot members are integrally formed with said lower frame member.
- 6. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said upper frame member further comprises a cavity bounded on at least one side by said upper deck.
- 7. The pallet of claim 6, wherein said cavity further comprises a second support material disposed therein.
- 8. The pallet of claim 7, wherein said cavity is bounded on all sides by said upper frame member.
- 9. The pallet of claim 1, wherein each of said foot members further comprises,
a plurality of teeth depending from said upper frame member, and a plurality of teeth depending from said lower frame member configured to engage the plurality of teeth depending from said upper frame member.
- 10. The pallet of claim 9, further comprising reinforcement elements disposed adjacent to base portions of said teeth of each plurality of teeth depending from said upper frame member and the lower frame member.
- 11. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said upper deck is reinforced with a reinforcement member comprising at least two plates disposed in a spaced relationship and a support element disposed between and connecting said at least two plates.
- 12. The pallet of claim 11, wherein said support element comprises at least two support members disposed between and normal to said at least two plates.
- 13. The pallet of claim 12, wherein a second support material is disposed between said at least two plates and said at least two support members.
- 14. The pallet of claim 13, wherein said support material is selected from the group consisting of plastic, wood, fiberglass, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing materials.
- 15. The pallet of claim 13, wherein said support material comprises foam.
- 16. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said upper deck comprises a composite polymer material.
- 17. The pallet of claim 16, wherein said composite polymer material comprises,
a biaxial weave of fibrous polymer, and a sheet of polymer bonded to said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer.
- 18. The pallet of claim 17, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 19. The pallet of claim 17, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of fibrous glass, fibrous carbon, UV stabilizing compounds, biocidal compounds, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 20. The pallet of claim 1, wherein said support material is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polystyrene, polyethylene, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 21. A composite pallet, comprising:
an upper deck, comprising,
a first half, a second half disposed in communication with a major face of said first half, and a support material disposed between said first half and said second half; an upper frame member supporting said upper deck; a plurality of foot members disposed in physical contact with said upper frame member; and a lower frame member disposed in physical contact with said plurality of foot members.
- 22. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said first half and said second half further comprise protrusions extending therefrom, said protrusions on said first half being correspondingly matable with said protrusions on said second half.
- 23. The composite pallet of claim 22, wherein said protrusions include holes, and wherein said holes define about 5% to about 40% open space in said upper deck.
- 24. The composite pallet of claim 23, wherein said holes effectuate fluid communication between said first half and said second half.
- 25. The composite pallet of claim 23, wherein said protrusions on said first half are attached to said protrusions on said second half to join said first half to said second half.
- 26. The composite pallet of claim 24, wherein said holes of said first half include material extending from edges of said holes, said material being inserted through said holes of said second half and deformed to retain said first half to said second half.
- 27. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein edge portions of said first half are crimped to edge portions of said second half such that holes in said first half align with holes in said second half.
- 28. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said support material comprises foam.
- 29. The composite pallet of claim 28, wherein said foam is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polystyrene, polyethylene, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 30. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said upper frame member further comprises a post extending therefrom through a hole in said upper deck, said post being deformed to retain said upper deck to said upper frame member.
- 31. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said upper frame member includes a rounded outer edge.
- 32. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said lower frame member includes a rounded outer edge.
- 33. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said foot member includes a rounded outer surface.
- 34. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein each of said foot members is collapsible.
- 35. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said first half and said second half are formed and attached via a twin sheet thermo-forming technique.
- 36. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said upper deck comprises a composite polymer material formable into said first half and said second half of said upper deck.
- 37. The composite pallet of claim 36, wherein said composite polymer material comprises,
a biaxial weave of fibrous polymer, and a sheet of polymer bonded to said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer.
- 38. The composite pallet of claim 37, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 39. The composite pallet of claim 37, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of fibrous glass, fibrous carbon, IV stabilizing compounds, biocidal compounds, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 40. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said upper deck comprises a non-skid surface.
- 41. The composite pallet of claim 21, wherein said upper deck is bowed out of the plane thereof.
- 42. A collapsible pallet, comprising:
an upper deck; a lower frame member being arranged in a parallel planar relationship with said upper deck; and a plurality of collapsible foot members positioned between said upper deck and said lower frame member, each of said collapsible foot members comprising,
a first foot half attached to said upper deck, and a second foot half attached to said lower frame member, said lower foot half being correspondingly engagable with said first foot half to maintain said collapsible pallet in either a collapsed or a non-collapsed state.
- 43. The collapsible pallet of claim 42 wherein each first foot half is a tubular structure defined by at least one wall and being open on one side and attached to said upper deck on a side opposing the open side, said first foot half having slits configured to receive a corresponding second foot half to collapse said foot members.
- 44. The collapsible pallet of claim 43, wherein each of the corresponding second foot halves includes slits configured to be received in slits in each of said first foot halves to collapse said foot members.
- 45. The collapsible pallet of claim 43 wherein at least one of said collapsible foot members further comprises a lever mechanism that enables said upper deck and said lower deck to be locked into either a collapsed or a non-collapsed position.
- 46. The collapsible pallet of claim 45 wherein said lever mechanism further comprises a linkage arrangement connected between said upper deck and said lower frame member, said linkage arrangement being configured to collapse or uncollapse said upper deck and said lower frame member upon articulation thereof.
- 47. The collapsible pallet of claim 46 wherein said linkage arrangement further comprises,
a tie bar connected on a first end to said upper deck and on a second end to said lower frame member, and a handle connected to said tie bar, said handle being configured to lift said upper deck away from said lower frame member to un-collapse said pallet and to lower said upper deck to realign said slits to collapse said pallet.
- 48. The collapsible pallet of claim 42 wherein said upper deck is reinforced with a reinforcement member comprising at least two plates disposed in a spaced relationship and a support element disposed between and connecting said at least two plates.
- 49. The collapsible pallet of claim 48 wherein said support element comprises at least two support members disposed between and normal to said at least two plates.
- 50. We collapsible pallet of claim 49 wherein a support material is disposed between said at least two plates and said at least two support members.
- 51. The collapsible pallet of claim 50, wherein said support material is selected from the group consisting of plastic, wood, fiberglass, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing materials.
- 52. The collapsible pallet of claim 50, wherein said support material comprises foam.
- 53. The collapsible pallet of claim 42, wherein each of said foot halves comprises a foam filling.
- 54. The collapsible pallet of claim 42 having a weight per unit area based on an upper deck dimension of less than or equal to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 55. The collapsible pallet of claim 54, wherein the weight per unit area based on the upper deck dimension is about 2.5 lb/ft2 to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 56. A tubular and nestable foot assembly for a collapsible pallet, comprising:
a first foot half having a slit defined therein from an edge thereof, said first foot being attachable to a first deck of said collapsible pallet; and a second foot half having a slit defined therein from an edge thereof, said second foot being attachable to a second deck of said collapsible pallet, said slits in said second foot half being configured to be engagable by said slit in said first foot half and received therein to bias said first deck in the direction of said second deck.
- 57. The foot assembly of claim 56, wherein each of said foot halves further comprises an open face and wherein said slits extend perpendicularly to said open face.
- 58. A collapsible pallet, comprising:
an upper deck; a foot member disposed on said upper deck, said foot member comprising,
a first foot half disposed on said upper deck, said first foot half having a pin disposed thereon, and a second foot half, said second foot half having a hole disposed therein for receiving said pin; and a lower deck comprising said second foot half.
- 59. The collapsible pallet of claim 58, wherein said pin is slidably disposed in said hole.
- 60. The collapsible pallet of claim 58, wherein said hole is defined by a wider opening on one end and a narrower opening on an opposing end to define a keyhole shape.
- 61. The collapsible pallet of claim 60, wherein said pin includes a retaining member disposed thereon and is configured to be received in said wider opening and slidingly received in said narrower opening, thereby causing said pin to be retained in said narrower.
- 62. The collapsible pallet of claim 58, wherein said foot halves further comprise a frusto-pyramidical shape.
- 63. The collapsible pallet of claim 58, wherein at least one of said foot halves further comprise a material selected from the group consisting of plastic, wood, fiberglass, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing.
- 64. The collapsible pallet of claim 58, wherein said foot halves further comprise foam.
- 65. The collapsible pallet of claim 64, wherein said foam is a urethane-based foam.
- 66. The collapsible pallet of claim 58 having a weight per unit area based on an upper deck dimension of less than or equal to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 67. The collapsible pallet of claim 66, wherein the weight per unit area based on the upper deck dimension is about 2.5 lb/ft2 to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 68. A pallet, comprising:
an upper deck; a lower frame member arranged in a parallel planar relationship with said upper deck; a plurality of foot members connected to said upper deck and said lower frame member; and a reinforcement member positioned in physical contact with said upper deck, said reinforcement member comprising,
a first plate, a second plate disposed in a spaced relationship with said first plate, and a support element disposed between said first plate and said second plate.
- 69. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said upper deck comprises a composite polymer material.
- 70. The pallet of claim 69, wherein said composite polymer material comprises,
a biaxial weave of fibrous polymer, and a sheet of polymer bonded to said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer.
- 71. The pallet of claim 70, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, polyethylene, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 72. The pallet of claim 70, wherein said biaxial weave of fibrous polymer further comprises an additive selected from the group consisting of fibrous glass, fibrous carbon, UV stabilizing compounds, biocidal compounds, and combinations of the foregoing materials.
- 73. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said upper deck comprises a non-skid surface.
- 74. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said support element further comprises a support member disposed between and normal to facing surfaces of said first plate and said second plate.
- 75. The pallet of claim 74, wherein said support member further comprises perforated openings.
- 76. The pallet of claim 75, wherein said openings further comprise a geometric shape selected from the group consisting of circular, substantially circular, oblong, multi-sided, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing shapes.
- 77. The pallet of claim 75, wherein said openings comprise triangular shapes arranged to be alternating in orientation such that a truss pattern is defined thereby, said truss pattern extending along a length of said support members.
- 78. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said first plate is perforated with openings.
- 79. The pallet of claim 78, wherein said openings further comprises a geometric shape selected from the group consisting of circular, substantially circular, oblong, multi-sided, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing shapes.
- 80. The pallet of claim 74, wherein a support member thickness is different from a first plate thickness or a second plate thickness.
- 81. The pallet of claim 74 wherein a support member thickness is less than a first plate thickness and said second plate thickness.
- 82. The pallet of claim 74 wherein a support material is disposed adjacent to said support member.
- 83. The pallet of claim 82 wherein said support material comprises foam.
- 84. The pallet of claim 83, wherein said first plate and said second plate each include at least one appendage depending therefrom.
- 85. The pallet of claim 84, wherein said appendages comprise a knobbed portion on an end distal from an end at which said appendages are connected to either said first plate or said second plate.
- 86. The pallet of claim 84, wherein said appendages comprise tabs cut out of said first plate or said second plate, said tabs being configured to protrude into said rigid support material.
- 87. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said reinforcement member comprises a material selected from the group consisting of steel, aluminum, titanium, chromium, molybdenum, carbon, composites and alloys of the foregoing materials, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing materials.
- 88. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said support element comprises a material selected from the group consisting of foam, plastic, wood, fiberglass, porous ceramic, porous metal, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing materials.
- 89. The pallet of claim 68 further comprising a second reinforcement member positioned in physical contact with said lower frame member.
- 90. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said reinforcement member comprises a material having a yield strength of greater than or equal to about 50,000 psi.
- 91. The pallet of claim 68, wherein said reinforcement member further comprises a corrosion prevention material disposed on a surface thereof.
- 92. The pallet of claim 68 having a weight per unit area based on an upper deck dimension of less than or equal to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 93. The pallet of claim 92, wherein the weight per unit area based on the upper deck dimension is about 2.5 lb/ft2 to about 4.5 lb/ft2.
- 94. A reinforcement structure disposed within a deck of a pallet, said reinforcement structure comprising:
a first reinforcement member extending from a first edge of the deck to an opposing edge of said deck; a second reinforcement member extending from a point on said first reinforcement member intermediate ends of said first reinforcement member to an edge of said deck adjacent to said first edge of said deck; and a third reinforcement member extending from a point on said first reinforcement member intermediate ends of said first reinforcement member and opposing the point on said first reinforcement member at which said second reinforcement member extends from to an edge of said deck adjacent to said first edge of said deck and opposing the edge of said deck at which an end of said second reinforcement member is disposed.
- 95. The reinforcement structure of claim 94, wherein said second reinforcement member and said third reinforcement member are attached to opposing sides of said first reinforcement member.
- 96. The reinforcement structure of claim 94, wherein said arrangement of reinforcement members is positioned within said deck of the pallet with an angled from an arrangement of reinforcement members positioned within a second deck of said pallet positioned adjacent to and parallel to said deck of said pallet.
- 97. A reinforcement structure disposed within a deck of a pallet, said reinforcement structure comprising:
a first reinforcement member extending from a first edge of said deck to an opposing edge of said deck; and a second reinforcement member extending from an edge of the deck adjacent to the first edge of the deck, crossing over said first reinforcement member, and extending to an edge of the deck opposing the edge from which said second reinforcement member originates.
- 98. The reinforcement structure of claim 97, wherein a point at which said first reinforcement member crosses over said second reinforcement member occurs at a point intermediate opposing ends of said first reinforcement member and intermediate opposing ends of said second reinforcement member.
- 99. The reinforcement structure of claim 97, wherein the point at which said first reinforcement member crosses over said second reinforcement member results in a point having an increased thickness, the point of increased thickness being positioned to be concealable within a foot member disposed adjacent the deck of the pallet.
- 100. A reinforcement structure disposed within a deck of a pallet, the reinforcement structure comprising:
a structural hub member, said structural hub member being disposable substantially equidistant from edges of the deck; and a plurality of reinforcement members supported at said structural hub member and extendable to the edges of the deck.
- 101. The reinforcement structure of claim 100, wherein said structural hub member comprises a plurality of legs extending radially and planarly therefrom, each of the legs being configured to receive a corresponding reinforcement member from said plurality of reinforcement members.
- 102. The reinforcement structure of claim 101, wherein each of the legs extending from said structural hub member is configured to receive the corresponding reinforcement member thereover, each of the reinforcement members being retained on the legs.
- 103. The reinforcement structure of claim 101, wherein each of the legs extending from said structural hub member is configured to receive the corresponding reinforcement member axially into an end thereof, each of the reinforcement members being retained on the legs.
- 104. A reinforcement structure disposed within a deck of a pallet, the reinforcement structure comprising:
a reinforcement member, said reinforcement member being extendable from a first edge of the deck to an opposing edge of the deck, said reinforcement member comprising a plurality of legs depending from opposing sides of said reinforcement member, each leg of said plurality of legs extending planarly from said reinforcement member; and a plurality of sub-reinforcement members, said plurality of sub-reinforcement members corresponding in number to said plurality of legs depending from opposing sides of said reinforcement member and being supported at said plurality of legs, each sub-reinforcement member of said plurality of sub-reinforcement members being extendable to the edges of the deck.
- 105. The reinforcement structure of claim 104, wherein the legs of said plurality of legs are configured to receive the corresponding sub-reinforcement member thereover, each of the sub-reinforcement members of said plurality of sub-reinforcement members being retained on the legs.
- 106. The reinforcement structure of claim 104, wherein the legs of said plurality of legs are configured to receive the corresponding sub-reinforcement member axially there in, each of the sub-reinforcement members of said plurality of sub-reinforcement members being retained on the legs.
- 107. A reinforcement structure disposed within a deck of a pallet, the reinforcement structure comprising:
a first reinforcement member extendable between opposing edges of the deck, said first reinforcement member having an opening disposed laterally therethrough at a point intermediate opposing ends thereof; and a second reinforcement member received through said opening disposed in said first reinforcement member, said second reinforcement member being extendable between opposing edges of the deck.
- 108. A pallet substructure, comprising:
a reinforcement structure; a foot member; and a gusset disposed in mechanical communication with said reinforcement structure and said foot member.
- 109. The pallet substructure of claim 108, wherein said gusset is attached to said foot member.
- 110. The pallet substructure of claim 109, wherein said gusset is attached to an inner wall of said foot member.
- 111. The pallet substructure of claim 110, wherein said foot member is filled with a foam support material.
- 112. The pallet substructure of claim 108, wherein said foot member is filled with a foam support material.
- 113. The pallet substructure of claim 108, wherein said reinforcement structure is bowed out of the plane thereof.
- 114. A pallet, comprising:
a plurality of ribs spaced parallel to each other; a plurality of cross beams positioned transverse to each rib of said plurality of ribs to support said plurality of ribs; and a puncture-resistant film disposed over said plurality of ribs and said plurality of cross beams.
- 115. The pallet of claim 14, wherein said puncture resistant film includes a non-skid surface embossed thereon.
- 116. The pallet of claim 115, wherein said puncture-resistant film includes a non-skid film attached thereto.
