Claims
- 1. A plastisol comprising:
A) particles of a dispersion grade polymer selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride; and B) from 10 to 100 weight percent, based on the weight of said polymer, of a plasticizer composition comprising: p2 1) an ester corresponding to formula (I) R C(O)OR2O(O)CR3; I 2) an ester corresponding to formula (II) R1C(O)OR2O(O)CR1; II and 3) an ester corresponding to formula (III) R3C(O)OR2O(O)CR3 III wherein R1 is at least one radical selected from the group consisting of phenyl and alkyl-substituted phenyl, R2 is a divalent radical of the formula —R4(OR4)m—, R3 is an alkyl radical containing from 3 to 21 carbon atoms, R4 is an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, m represents 0 or the integer 1 or 2 and the molar ratio of R1 to R3 radicals is from 1:2 to 15:1.
- 2. A plastisol according to claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of R1 to R3 radicals is at least 1:1, said composition is a liquid at 25° C. and the average size of said particles is less than 10 microns.
- 3. A plastisol according to claim 2 wherein said molar ratio is from 3:1 to 12:1.
- 4. A plastisol according to claim 3 wherein said composition additionally contains at least one monoester exhibiting a formula selected from the group consisting of R1C(O)OR2OH and R3C(O)OR2OH and said monoester constitutes up to 5 weight percent of said plasticizer composition.
- 5. A plastisol according to claim 1 wherein R1 is phenyl, m is 1 or 2 and R3 contains from 8 to 16 carbon atoms.
- 6. A plastisol according to claim 5 wherein R4 is ethyl or propyl and R3 contains 11 carbon atoms.
- 7. A plastisol according to claim 1 wherein said plastisol additionally comprises at least one ester derived from a monohydric alcohol and a carboxylic acid as a plasticizer for said polymer.
- 8. A plastisol according to claim 7 wherein said carboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, phthalic acid and adipic acid.
- 9. A plasticized polymer composition comprising an organic polymer and an effective amount of a plasticizer for said organic polymer, wherein
said organic polymer is selected from the group consisting of cellulose ester polymers, polystyrene, chlorinated polyethylenes, polyacrylics, styrene/butadiene copolymers, polysulfides and natural rubber; and said plasticizer comprises:
1) an ester corresponding to formula (I) R1C(O)OR2O(O)CR3; I 2) an ester corresponding to formula (II) R1C(O)OR2O(O)CR1; II and 3) an ester corresponding to formula (III) R3C(O)OR2O(O)CR3 III wherein R1 is at least one radical selected from the group consisting of phenyl and alkyl-substituted phenyl, R2 is a divalent radical of the formula —R4(OR4)m—, R3 is an alkyl radical containing from 3 to 21 carbon atoms , R4 is an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, m represents 0 or the integer 1 or 2 and the molar ratio of R1 to R3 radicals is from 1:2 to 15:1
- 10. A composition according to claim 9 wherein said plasticizer comprises up to 70 weight percent of the combined weight of said organic polymer and said plasticizer.
- 11. A composition according to claim 9 wherein said plasticizer consists essentially of
1) an ester corresponding to formula (I) R1C(O)OR2O(O)CR3; I 2) an ester corresponding to formula (II) R1C(O)OR2O(O)CR1; II 3) an ester corresponding to formula (III) R3C(O)OR2O(O)CR3; III and 4) up to 1 weight percent of at least one monoester exhibiting a formula selected from the group consisting of R1C(O)OR2OH and R3C(O)OR2OH
