- a workpiece support means for supporting the workpiece in a manner such that the workpiece is suspended therefrom and is located between said punch and said die with the plane of the workpiece vertical.
- 4. The plate bending machine of claim 3, wherein said first support means comprises a pair of arms for supporting respectively said punch and said die.
- 5. A plate bending machine for bending a workpiece residing substantially in a plane, comprising:
- a linear punch and a linear die, said punch and said die each having a longitudinal axis, said punch and die relatively movable toward and away from each other along a linear working axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said punch and said die, for effecting a bending operation in a workpiece disposed therebetween;
- a first support means for supporting said punch and said die, said first support means being supported on a base of said plate bending machine, for rotation about a first axis about which the workpiece is bent, said first support means comprising an arm and a turret with said turret mounted on said arm so as to be rotatable about a second axis, for supporting a plurality of punches or dies; and
- a workpiece support means for supporting the workpiece in a manner such that the workpiece is suspended therefrom and is located between said punch and said die with the plane of the workpiece vertical.
- 6. The plate bending machine of claim 5, wherein the workpiece support means comprises:
- means for clamping a workpiece so as to be disposed between the arm of the first support means; and
- column means for supporting the workpiece clamping means in a manner such that the workpiece is movable along an axis parallel to the plate surface of the workpiece.
- 7. The plate bending machine of claim 6, wherein the workpiece clamping means comprises:
- a pair of jaws for clamping the workpiece therebetween, and
- a universal joint means for supporting the jaws in a pivotable manner around a pair of axes, the pair of axes lying in a plane parallel to the surface of the workpiece and intersecting with each other.
- 8. The plate bending machine of claim 7, wherein the workpiece clamping means further comprises mean for restraining the universal joint means from pivoting.
- 9. The plate bending machine of claim 8, wherein said universal joint comprises a ring member supported on the column means so as to be pivotable around a first axis lying in the plane parallel to the surface of the workpiece, and a central member supported on the ring member so as to be pivotable around a second axis lying in the plane parallel to the workpiece surface, and intersecting with said first axis; and
- said restraining means comprises an engaging member mounted on the column means and capable of engaging an engaging portion formed in the control member of the universal joint.
- 10. The plate bending machine of claim 6, wherein said workpiece clamping means comprises a pair of jaws for clamping the workpiece therebetween; and
- means for supporting said pair of jaws in a movable manner relative to the column means in a direction parallel to the surface of the workpiece.
- 11. The plate bending machine of claim 10, wherein said workpiece clamping means further comprises means for restraining the pair of the jaws from moving in the direction parallel to the surface of the workpiece.
- 12. The plate bending machine of claim 10, wherein the workpiece supporting means further comprises means mounted on the column means, for supporting the pair of the jaws in a movable manner in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the workpiece.
