Claims
- 1. A plate bending machine for bending a workpiece having a planar portion comprising:
- a base;
- a V-sectioned punch and a V-sectioned die provided on the base to oppose and cooperate with each other, the apex of the V-sectioned punch having an edge defining a bending axis;
- means for relatively moving the punch and die linearly toward and away from each other for effecting engagement of the workpiece along the bending axis;
- a first support means for supporting the punch and the die, the first support means being rotatable about an axis coincident with the bending axis;
- a workpiece support means for supporting the workpiece between the punch and the die with the planar portion of the workpiece arranged substantially vertically, the workpiece support means including a pair of jaws for gripping an end section of the workpiece; and
- means for controlling the rotation of said first support means in accordance with a predetermined program of variation of the angle of rotation with time, said program including experimentally determined deformation behavior of the workpiece so that during bending, the end section of the workpiece gripped by the pair of jaws remains substantially stationary in an initial workpiece plane.
- 2. A plate bending machine as in claim 1, wherein the workpiece support means further includes an arm provided on the base, the means for mounting the pair of jaws on the arm in a manner such that the pair of jaws are movable by a limited amount along three cartesian axes.
- 3. A plate bending machine as in claim 2, wherein said first support means is rotated through an angle varying from 90.degree. to 45.degree. at a varying rate of change according to experimentally determined deformation behavior of the workpiece.
- 4. A plate bending machine as in claim 2, wherein the workpiece support means further includes means for mounting the pair of jaws on the arm in a manner such that the pair of jaws is pivotable about two perpendicular axes in the plane of the workpiece to be gripped by the jaws.
- 5. A plate bending machine as in claim 4, wherein said first support means is rotated through an angle varying from 90.degree. to 45.degree. at a varying rate of change according to experimentally determined deformation behavior of the workpiece.
- 6. A plate bending machine for bending a workpiece residing substantially in a plane, comprising:
- a V-sectioned linear punch and a V-sectioned linear die provided to oppose and cooperate with each other, said punch and said die each having a longitudinal axis, said punch and die relatively movable toward and away from each other along a linear working axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said punch and said die, for effecting a bending operation in a workpiece disposed therebetween;
- a first support means for supporting said punch and said die, said first support means being supported on a base of said plate bending machine, for rotation about an axis coincident with a first axis about which the workpiece is bent, said first axis defined by the apex of the v-sectioned punch;
- a workpiece support means for supporting the workpiece in a manner such that the workpiece is suspended therefrom and is located between said punch and said die with the plane of the workpiece vertical, the workpiece support means including a pair of jaws for gripping an end section of the workpiece; and
- means for controlling the rotation of said first support means in accordance with a predetermined program of variation of the angle of rotation with time, said program including experimentally determined deformation behavior of the workpiece so that during bending, the end section of the workpiece gripped by the pair of jaws remains substantially stationary in an initial workpiece plane.
- 7. A plate bending machine as in claim 6, wherein the workpiece support means further includes an arm provided on the base, and means for mounting the pair of jaws on the arm in a manner such that the pair of jaws are movable by a limited amount along three cartesian axes.
- 8. A plate bending machine as in claim 7, wherein the workpiece support means further includes means for mounting the pair of jaws on the arm in a manner such that the pair of jaws is pivotable about two perpendicular axes in the plane of the workpiece to be gripped by the jaws.
