Claims
- 1. A diffusion assembly for treating a liquid slurry of solid material, said assembly comprising:a substantially upright vessel have a non-circular cross-section, defined by a vessel wall, for at least a treatment portion thereof, said treatment portion between an inlet and an outlet for liquid slurry; at least one screen surface for removing some of the liquid of the liquid slurry from said treatment portion of said vessel, but minimal solids slurried by the liquid; and said vessel and said at least one screen surface, constructed and positioned with respect to each other so that during treatment the liquid slurry has a substantially uniform width in said treatment portion and there is substantially uniform resistance to the flow of slurry over said screen surface over any particular cross-section of said vessel in said treatment portion.
- 2. An assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said vessel has a substantially race track shape in cross-section at said treatment portion.
- 3. An assembly as recited in claim 2 further comprising treatment liquid introducing means mounted interiorly of said vessel treatment portion, and wherein said screen surface is operatively mounted in or with said vessel wall.
- 4. An assembly as recited in claim 3 wherein said screen surface comprises a plurality of substantially annular screen elements vertically spaced from each other along said vessel treatment portion, and wherein said liquid introducing means comprises a plurality of vertically spaced liquid introducing structures, substantially in vertical alignment with said substantially annular screen elements.
- 5. An assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said screen surface is mounted interiorly of said vessel treatment portion, and further comprising treatment liquid introducing means operatively mounted in or with said vessel wall for introducing treatment liquid into the slurry in said vessel treatment portion.
- 6. An assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said screen surface is substantially vertical, and comprises screening portions vertically spaced by non-screening portions.
- 7. An assembly as recited in claim 6 wherein said vessel wall bulges out substantially at the location of said non-screening portions so as to provide a slurry width thereat at least 5% wider than at said screening portions associated therewith.
- 8. An assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said screen surface is mounted interiorly of said vessel by a plurality of hollow supports which both support said screen surface and remove liquid which passes through said support surface from said vessel; and further comprising means for moving said screen surface at spaced points in time so as to substantially prevent plugging of said screen surface.
- 9. An assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said vessel inlet is at the bottom thereof, and said vessel outlet is at the top thereof.
- 10. An assembly as recited in claim 9 further comprising a one-dimensional convergence and side relief structure directly connected to or forming at least part of said outlet.
- 11. An assembly as recited in claim 1 further comprising treatment liquid introducing means associated with said treatment portion of said vessel; and wherein said vessel, liquid introducing means, and at least one screen surface, are constructed and positioned with respect to each other so that the permeability of a slurry bed in said treatment portion is a maximum of about 750 pounds per square foot per foot.
- 12. An assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein the vessel is a substantially atmospheric pressure vessel, and wherein said slurry width forms an annulus in said vessel, and said annulus is substantially uninterrupted in said treatment portion.
- 13. An assembly as recited in claim 12 further comprising treatment liquid introducing means associated with said treatment portion of said vessel; and wherein said vessel, liquid introducing means, and at least one screen surface, are constructed and positioned with respect to each other so that the permeability of a slurry bed in said treatment portion is a maximum of about 1,000 pounds per square foot per foot.
- 14. An assembly as recited in claim 1 in combination with a plurality of like vessels, and an exterior vessel, said exterior vessel mounting said plurality of like vessels therein.
- 15. A method of treating a slurry of compressible comminuted cellulosic fibrous material, having a permeability that varies as it is compressed, in a treatment zone, comprising:(a) introducing a flow of the slurry into the treatment zone to form a bed of slurry having a first side and a second side, and a width; (b) passing the slurry through the treatment zone; (c) in the treatment zone introducing a treatment liquid into the bed at the first side thereof so that the liquid passes from the first side through to the second side thereof; (d) removing at least some of the liquid from the second side of the bed; and wherein (a)-(d) are practiced so that the permeability of the slurry bed in the treatment zone is a maximum of about 750 lbs./ft.2/ft.
- 16. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein (b) is practiced substantially without disrupting the flow of slurry, and wherein (a)-(d) are practiced at substantially atmospheric pressure.
- 17. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein (a)-(d) are further practiced with a slurry having a consistency throughout the treatment zone of between about 8-16%, and with a difference in consistency in the treatment zone of less than about 6%.
- 18. A method as recited in claim 17 wherein (c) and (d) are not practiced at spaced locations as the slurry moves through the treatment zone.
- 19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein said method further comprises increasing the width of the slurry bed at the spaced locations where (c) and (d) are not practiced, to allow said slurry to recover substantially its permeability before (c).
- 20. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein (a) and (c) are practiced in substantially vertical paths and (c) in a substantially horizontal path; and wherein (c) and (d) are not practiced at spaced locations as the slurry moves through the treatment zone, and wherein (a)-(d) are practiced utilizing a screen surface at the second side thereof; and further comprising occasionally moving the screen surface in a direction or manner distinct from the direction of flow of slurry through the treatment zone so as to minimize plugging thereof, by rotating the screen surface about an axis substantially parallel to the direction of slurry flow through the treatment zone of less than 30 degrees, or by vibrating or oscillating the screen surface in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of flow of slurry through the treatment zone.
- 21. A method as recited in claim 20 wherein said method further comprises increasing the width of the slurry bed at the spaced locations where (c) and (d) are not practiced, to allow said slurry to recover permeability.
- 22. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein (a)-(d) are practiced to establish a plurality of substantially parallel beds of slurry and treatment zones, and to treat slurry in all of said plurality of beds and treatment zones at substantially the same time; and further comprising combining said plurality of beds after treatment thereof.
- 23. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein (c) is practiced using a wash liquid to effect washing of the material of the slurry.
- 24. A diffusion assembly for treating a liquid slurry of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material, each assembly comprising:a substantially upright vessel having a non-circular cross-section, defined by a vessel wall, for at least a treatment portion thereof between an inlet and outlet; at least one screen surface which removes some of the liquid of the comminuted cellulosic fibrous material slurry from the treatment portion of the vessel; and said vessel and said at least one screen surface constructed and positioned with respect to each other so that during treatment the slurry has a substantially uniform width in said treatment portion and so that the permeability of the slurry in said treatment portion is a maximum of about 750 pounds per square foot per foot.
- 25. An assembly as recited in claim 24 further comprising treatment liquid introducing devices associated with said treatment portion which introduce liquid into said treatment portion including so that the permeability of the slurry in said treatment portion is a maximum of about 750 pounds per square foot per foot.
- 26. An assembly as recited in claim 25 wherein said vessel has a substantially race track shape in cross-section at said treatment portion.
- 27. An assembly as recited in claim 25 wherein said screen surface comprises screening portions vertically spaced by non-screening portions; and wherein said vessel wall bulges our substantially at the location of said non-screening portions so as to provide a slurry width thereat at least 5% wider than at said screening portions associated therewith.
- 28. An assembly as recited in claim 24 wherein said vessel has a substantially race track shape in cross-section at said treatment portion.
- 29. An assembly as recited in claim 24 wherein said screen surface comprises screening portions vertically spaced by non-screening portions; and wherein said vessel wall bulges our substantially at the location of said non-screening portions so as to provide a slurry width thereat at least 5% wider than at said screening portions associated therewith.
- 30. An assembly as recited in claim 29 wherein said vessel has a substantially race track shape in cross-section at said treatment portion.
- 31. An assembly as recited in claim 29 wherein said screen surface comprises screening portions vertically spaced by non-screening portions; and wherein said vessel wall bulges our substantially at the location of said non-screening portions so as to provide a slurry width thereat at least 5% wider than at said screening portions associated therewith.
