Claims
- 1. In a filter press including a frame having a pair of horizontally elongate and generally parallel side rails which extend lengthwise of the press and are sidewardly spaced apart, a first head structure stationarily mounted adjacent one end of said rails, a second head structure mounted on said rails for movement toward and away from said first head structure for respective closing and opening of said press, a plurality of vertically enlarged filter plates disposed in generally side-by-side relationship to define a horizontally extending stack between said first and second head structures when said press is closed, said filter plates extending transversely between and being slidably supported on said side rails, each said filter plate having parts which project outwardly from opposite vertical side edges thereof, and a shifter assembly for effecting shifting of individual said filter plates along the side rails toward the second head structure when said second head structure is in an open position, said shifter assembly including a shifter housing supported for movement lengthwise along the press and having a pair of housing parts disposed on opposite sides of the press so that each said housing part is disposed adjacent a respective one of said side rails, said shifter housing also including an upwardly arched bridging part which extends transversely of said press and rigidly joins said housing parts together, the improvement wherein said shifter assembly includes:
- drive means mounted on said housing for linearly drivingly moving said housing lengthwise of said press generally along and parallel to said side rails, said drive means including a drive motor mounted on said housing and a driving member drivingly engaged with an elongate member which is fixed relative to the respective side rail and extends lengthwise therealong;
- plate contacting means mounted on said housing for contacting an endmost said filter plate as associated with the stack of filter plates which projects horizontally away from said first head structure;
- first control means provided on said shifter housing and responsive to said plate contacting means for automatically stopping said drive means when said plate contacting means contacts said endmost plate;
- filter plate shifting means including a shifter means mounted on each said housing part for movement between shifting and nonshifting positions and engageable with the projecting part on a respective side of the endmost filter plate for effecting slidable shifting of the endmost filter plate away from the stack toward the opened second head structure when the shifter means are in said shifting position, said shifter means being movably supported on said housing for movement from said shifting position into said nonshifting position wherein said shifter means are free of contact with said plates;
- second control means on said shifter housing for sensing stoppage of said drive motor and thereafter automatically effecting movement of said shifter means into said shifting position;
- each said shifter means including a pressure fluid shift cylinder having a plate shifting member movable between nonshift and shift positions, said plate shifting member being engageable with the projecting part of the filter plate when in said shift position; and
- third control means on said shifter housing for causing automatic movement of said plate shifting members to said shift position and return thereof to said nonshift position when said shifter means are moved into said shifting position.
- 2. A filter press according to claim 1, including fourth control means on said shifter housing for causing energization of said drive motor to advance the housing toward the next plate when the shifter means return to said nonshifting position.
- 3. A filter press according to claim 2, wherein said drive means and said shifter means are all driven by air.
- 4. A filter press according to claim 3, wherein said drive motor comprises an air-driven rotary motor and said drive member comprises a rotary drive wheel disposed in rolling driving engagement with the elongate member.
- 5. A filter press according to claim 1, wherein said drive motor comprises an air-driven rotary motor and said drive member comprises a rotary drive wheel disposed in rolling driving engagement with the elongate member.
- 6. A plate-type filter press for separating solids from slurries, comprising:
- a frame including a pair of horizontally elongate and generally parallel side rails which extend lengthwise of the press and are sidewardly spaced apart;
- a first head structure stationarily mounted adjacent one end of said side rails, and a second head structure mounted on said side rails for movement horizontally toward and away from said first head structure for respective closing and opening of said press;
- a plurality of vertically enlarged filter plates disposed horizontally in side-by-side relationship to define a horizontally extending stack of said plates between said first and second head structures when said press is closed, said filter plates extending transversely between and being slidably supported on said side rails, each said filter plate having handle parts which project outwardly from opposite vertical side edges thereof;
- a shifter housing supported on said frame for generally horizontal movement lengthwise of the press in generally parallel relationship to the elongate direction of said side rails, said shifter housing including a pair of housing parts which are disposed on opposite sides of the press so that each said housing part is disposed adjacent a respective one of said side rails, said shifter housing also including an upwardly-arched bridging part which extends transversely of said press and rigidly joins said housing parts together, said bridging part being of an upwardly arched configuration so as to freely pass over said filter plates;
- filter plate shifting means mounted on said shifter housing for effecting horizontal slidable shifting of individual said filter plates along the side rails away from said first head structure toward said second head structure when said second head structure is in an open position, said shifting means including a pair of substantially identical shifter mechanisms, each said shifter mechanism being mounted on a respective one of said housing parts so that said shifter mechanisms are disposed adjacent the opposite sides of the press, each said shifter mechanism including a shifting element which is movable generally horizontally from a retracted position to an extended position so as to engage the handle part and effect movement of the respective filter plate toward the second head structure;
- each said shifter mechanism including an air-actuated shift cylinder having a generally horizontally reciprocal driven element coupled to said shift element, and an activating means for moving the shift cylinder between a first position wherein the shift cylinder is unable to effect shifting of the filter plates and a second position wherein the shift element is disposed for engaging and shifting the plates in response to activation of the shift cylinder;
- drive means mounted on said shifter housing for effecting driving movement of the shifter housing lengthwise along the press, said drive means including a drive motor mounted on said shifter housing and a rotatable driving wheel rotatably mounted on one said housing part and rotatably driven by said drive motor, a generally linearly and horizontally elongate reaction element stationarily mounted relative to said frame and extending lengthwise along and in generally parallel and adjacent relationship to one of said side rails, said driving wheel being disposed in rolling engagement with said elongate reaction member to effect movement of said shifter housing relative to said frame; and
- control means mounted on said shifter housing for activating said plate shifting means including said shift cylinder to cause automatic and sequential shifting of individual filter plates toward the opened second head structure and for activating said drive means to movably advance the shifter housing toward an adjacent plate of the stack after the endmost plate of the stack has been shifted toward the second head structure;
- said control means including
- (a) first means for stopping said drive means when the drive means is moving lengthwise of the press in a direction toward the stack of plates and reaches a predetermined position adjacent the endmost plate of the stack, said first means including a plate sensing means for contacting the endmost plate for defining said predetermined position,
- (b) second means for energizing said activating means to move said shift mechanism into said second position to effect shifting of the endmost plate only when the drive means is stopped in said predetermined position, and
- (c) third means for automatically returning said shift mechanism to said first position following completion of plate shifting and for automatically energizing said drive means to effect driving movement of the shifter housing toward the next endmost plate of the stack.
- 7. A filter press according to claim 6, wherein a said rotatable drive wheel is mounted on only one of said housing parts.
- 8. A filter press according to claim 6, wherein said drive motor comprises a bi-directional rotary air-driven motor.
