Claims
- 1. A filter for supporting a precoat layer, the filter comprising:
- a pleated filter element having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of longitudinal pleats and
- a septum including a porous strip helically wrapped around the filter element under tension to precompress the filter element, wherein adjacent turns of the strip contact one another, the septum being more porous than the filter medium and being arranged to support a precoat layer, wherein the septum precompresses the filter element such that further compression of the diameter of the filter element during filtration will be no greater than about 5% of the precompressed diameter of the filter element.
- 2. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter element includes an upstream drainage layer, a downstream drainage layer, and a filter medium sandwiched between the upstream drainage layer and the downstream layer.
- 3. The filter of claim 2 wherein at least one of the upstream drainage layer and the downstream drainage layer comprises a polymeric mesh.
- 4. The filter of claim 3 wherein at least one of the upstream drainage layer and the downstream drainage layer comprises an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh.
- 5. The filter of claim 2 wherein the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 6. The filter of claim 1 wherein the septum comprises a metallic or a polymeric material.
- 7. The filter of claim 6 wherein the metallic material includes stainless steel.
- 8. The filter of claim 1 wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 9. The filter of claim 1 wherein adjacent turns of the septum overlap one another and are second to one another.
- 10. The filter of claim 9 wherein adjacent turns of the septum are secure to one another by a bonding agent.
- 11. The filter of claim 1 further comprising a first end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a first axial end of the filter element is attached to the first end cap.
- 12. The filter of claim 11 further comprising a second end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a second axial end of the filter element is attached to the second end cap.
- 13. The filter of claim 1 further comprising an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer.
- 14. The filter of claim 1 wherein the filter element includes a plurality of groups of pleats and a plurality of wedge-shaped support members, wherein each group of pleats comprises a plurality of pleats and wherein adjacent groups of pleats are separated by a wedge-shaped support member.
- 15. The filter of claim 1 wherein the height of each pleat is greater than (D-d)/2, where D and d are the outer and inner diameters of the filter element, respectively.
- 16. A filter for supporting a precoat layer, the filter comprising:
- a pleated filter element having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of longitudinal pleats in a laid-over state, the filter element comprising a pleated composite of a filter medium having a upstream side and a downstream side, a polymeric mesh disposed on the upstream side of the filter medium, and a polymeric mesh disposed on the downstream side of the filter medium; and
- a septum comprising a strip porous material helically wrapped around the filter element under tension in a plurality of turns, wherein adjacent turns contact one another, the septum being more porous than the filter medium and being arranged to support a precoat material.
- 17. The filter of claim 16 wherein the polymeric mesh disposed on at least one of the upstream or downstream sides of the filter medium comprises an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh.
- 18. The filter of claim 16 wherein the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 19. The filter of claim 16 wherein the septum comprises a metallic or a polymeric material.
- 20. The filter of claim 19 wherein the metallic material includes stainless steel.
- 21. The filter of claim 16 wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 22. The filter of claim 16 wherein adjacent turns of the septum overlap one another and are second to one another.
- 23. The filter of claim 19 wherein the adjacent turns of the septum are secure to one another by a bonding agent.
- 24. The filter of claim 16 further comprising a first end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a first axial end of the filter element is attached to the first end cap.
- 25. The filter of claim 24 further comprising a second end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a second axial end of the filter element is attached to the second end cap.
- 26. The filter of claim 16 further comprising an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer.
- 27. The filter of claim 16 wherein the septum comprises stainless steel, the polymeric mesh disposed on the upstream side and the downstream side of the filter medium comprises an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh, and the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide filters.
- 28. The filter of claim 27 further comprising end caps secured to the filter element, and an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer; and wherein end portions of the septum adjoining axial ends of the filter element are attached to the end caps and wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 29. A filter for supporting a precoat material, the filter comprising:
- a pleated filter element having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of longitudinal pleats, each pleat having first and second legs, a root, a crest, and a height greater than (D-d)/2 and less than (D.sup.2 -d.sup.2)/�4(d+2t)! where D and d are the outer and inner diameters of the filter element respectively, and t is the thickness of each leg, wherein the filter element comprises a pleated composite including a filter medium having an upstream side and a downstream side, an upstream support and drainage medium disposed downstream of the filter medium and a downstream support and drainage medium disposed downstream of the filter medium; and
- a septum comprising a porous strip helically wrapped around the filter element under tension in a plurality of turns, adjacent turns of the septum contacting one another and the septum being more porous than the filter medium and being arranged to support a precoat layer.
- 30. The filter of claim 29 wherein at least one of the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprises a polymeric mesh.
- 31. The filter of claim 30 wherein at least one of the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprises an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh.
- 32. The filter of claim 29 wherein the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 33. The filter of claim 29 wherein the septum comprises a metallic or a polymeric material.
- 34. The filter of claim 33 wherein the metallic material includes stainless steel.
- 35. The filter of claim 29 wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 36. The filter of claim 29 wherein adjacent turns of the septum overlap one another and are second to one another.
- 37. The filter of claim 36 wherein the adjacent turns of the septum are secure to one another by a bonding agent.
- 38. The filter of claim 29 further comprising a first end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a first axial end of the filter element is attached to the first end cap.
- 39. The filter of claim 38 further comprising a second end cap secured to the filter element, and wherein an end portion of the septum adjoining a second axial end of the filter element is attached to the second end cap.
- 40. The filter of claim 29 further comprising an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer.
- 41. The filter of claim 29 wherein the septum comprises stainless steel, the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprise an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh, and the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 42. The filter of claim 41 further comprising end caps secured to the filter element, and an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer; and wherein end portions of the septum adjoining axial ends of the filter element are attached to the end caps and wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 43. A filter for supporting a precoat layer, the filter comprising:
- a pleated filter element having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of longitudinal pleats, each pleat having first and second legs, a root, a crest, and a height greater than (D-d)/2 and less than (D.sup.2 -d.sup.2)/�4(d+2t)! where D and d are the outer and inner diameters of the filter element, respectively, and t is the thickness of each leg, and the filter element comprises a pleated composite including a filter medium having an upstream side and a downstream side, an upstream support and drainage medium disposed upstream of the filter medium and a downstream support and drainage medium disposed downstream of the filter medium, the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprising a mesh;
- a septum comprising a porous strip of mesh helically wrapped around the filter element under tension to precompress the filter element, the adjacent windings of mesh contacting each other, the septum being more porous than the filter medium and being arranged to support a precoat layer, wherein the septum precompresses the filter element such that further compression of the diameter of the filter element during filtration will be no greater than about 5% of the precompressed diameter of the filter element; and
- a first end cap and a second end cap, wherein the strip of mesh is joined to the first and second end caps.
- 44. The filter of claim 43 wherein at least one of the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprises a polymeric mesh.
- 45. The filter of claim 44 wherein at least one of the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprises an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh.
- 46. The filter of claim 43 wherein the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 47. The filter of claim 43 wherein the septum comprises a metallic or a polymeric material.
- 48. The filter of claim 47 wherein the metallic material includes stainless steel.
- 49. The filter of claim 43 wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
- 50. The filter of claim 43 wherein adjacent turns of the septum overlap one another and are second to one another.
- 51. The filter of claim 50 wherein the adjacent turns of the septum are secure to one another by a bonding agent.
- 52. The filter of claim 43 further comprising an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer.
- 53. The filter of claim 43 wherein the septum comprises stainless steel, the upstream support and drainage medium and the downstream support and drainage medium comprise an extruded or a woven polymeric mesh, and the filter medium includes aromatic polyamide fibers.
- 54. The filter of claim 53 further comprising an element surrounding the septum and arranged to protect a precoat layer; and wherein the septum is wrapped around the filter element at a tension of about 30 pounds or more per inch of width.
