Claims
- 1. A control system for an electrically driven meat trimming knife of the type having a handpiece with an annular cutting blade rotatably mounted on the front end of the handpiece and driven by a flexible drive cable extending into the handpiece, said cable being driven by an electric motor located remote from the said handpiece, said control system including:
- (a) gear means for operatively connecting an input end of the flexible drive cable to an output shaft of the electric motor for increasing the rotational speed of the drive cable greater than the rotational speed of the output shaft of the motor; and
- (b) clutch located at the electric motor for operatively connecting the output shaft of said motor to the input end of the drive cable through the gear means.
- 2. The control system defined in claim 1 in which the gear means include two pairs of gears, one of said pairs containing a large and a small gear; in which the large gear of said one pair being engaged with the output shaft of the electric motor and with one of the gears of the other of said gear pairs being engaged with the flexible drive cable; and in which the small gear of said one pair of gears being connected to the clutch.
- 3. The control system defined in claim 2 in which the individual gears of the two gear pairs are sized whereby the speed of the output shaft of the electric motor is approximately 3,450 RPM and the speed of the flexible drive cable is approximately 5,000 RPM.
- 4. The control system defined in claim 2 in which the clutch has aligned input and output shafts, with the small gear of said one pair being engaged with the input shaft of the clutch and with one of the gears of the other gear pair being engaged with the output shaft of the clutch; and in which said clutch shafts are offset from the output shaft of the electric motor.
- 5. The control system defined in claim 1 in which the clutch has an output shaft which is in axial alignment with an input end of the flexible drive cable.
- 6. The control system defined in claim 1 including manually actuated control means for activating the clutch for operatively connecting and disconnecting the electric motor shaft with the flexible drive cable; and in which said control means is contained in the handpiece.
- 7. The control system defined in claim 6 in which an electric signal is generated by the manually actuated control means for actuating the clutch.
