Claims
- 1. A pneumatic impact gun for upsetting one end of a rivet in a single impact comprising:
- piston means slidably arranged in a cylinder for impacting an anvil disposed at the downstream end of said cylinder;
- means for returning and maintaining said piston means at an upstream position within said cylinder;
- means for admitting a manually adjustable flow of air into said cylinder to displace said piston means a predetermined distance downstream within said cylinder over a variable time;
- means for storing an accumulated charge of compressed air arranged to communicate with said piston means; and,
- means for passing compressed air from said storage means so that when said piston means has been displaced a predetermined distance by the flow of compressed air from said admitting means, said storing means dumps an accumulated charge of compressed air into contact with the upstream side of said piston means to displace said piston means rapidly downstream in said cylinder to thereupon impact said anvil.
- 2. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein said means for returning and maintaining said piston means at an upstream position comprises a restricted flow of compressed air from a source passing through a normally open interlock valve into said cylinder on the downstream side of said piston means, and a plurality of exhaust ports located substantially radially around said cylinder wherein said exhaust ports are releasably sealed by band means, said band means normally closing said exhaust ports until a predetermined pressure of air is exerted thereupon.
- 3. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein said means for admitting a manually adjustable flow of air into said cylinder comprises an adjustable energy selector to thereby permit said storing means to transfer a predetermined flow of air to the upstream position of said piston means.
- 4. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein said means for storing an accumulated charge of compressed air comprises a volume substantially surrounding said cylinder.
- 5. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein said storing means is arranged to communicate with said piston means via a plurality of ports arranged substantially radially around said piston means.
- 6. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein said means for passing compressed air from a source to said storing means comprises two normally closed air valves, a first of said valves being manually operable to permit compressed air to open a second of said valves to enable compressed air to pass from a source to said storing means and subsequently to said admitting means.
- 7. An impact gun as described in claim 1 wherein a handle is secured to said cylinder at a position offset to permit a straight line to exist from an operator's wrist and the line of fire of said gun.
