Claims
- 1. A pneumatic interface apparatus for receiving digital input control signals and controlling the position of a pneumatic transducer in response to said signals, the apparatus including:
- a first solenoid valve to be energized for controlling the flow of a gas from a single source of pressurized gas to a first region confining a substantially constant volume of gas, said source being maintained at a substantially constant pressure;
- a second solenoid valve to be energized for controlling the flow of gas from said first region to a second region at atmospheric pressure;
- a volume relay having a first chamber coupled to said first valve and to said second valve by a pneumatic bus and a second chamber for coupling to a pneumatic transducer to be positionably controlled by a pneumatic analog output signal of said relay, said first chamber and said second chamber being in fluid flow isolation from one the other, said relay providing a second pressure at said second chamber which has a predetermined relationship to said first pressure;
- a first pneumatic restrictor interposed between said first region and said second region for controlling the rate of pressure decrease in said first region during those times when said second valve is energized;
- wherein said first restrictor is readily removable from said apparatus and is replaceable by a second restrictor having an orifice flow passage therethrough of a cross-sectional area different from that of the orifice flow passage of said first restrictor.
- 2. A pneumatic interface apparatus for converting digital electrical input signals to a pneumatic output signal in a heating, ventilating and air conditioning system and including:
- pneumatic input means adapted to be connected to a single first source of compressed gas at a substantially constant pressure and including normally closed first and second solenoid valves for receiving pulsed electrical input signals from a direct digital system controller, said first valve being energizable for flowing compressed gas from said first source to a region defining a substantially constant volume of gas, said second valve being energizable for flowing gas from said region to an area of ambient pressure;
- a pressure repeater for providing an analog output pressure in response to said digital input signals and including a first chamber coupled to said input means and a second chamber to be coupled to a pneumatic transducer to be positionally controlled;
- a reservoir coupled between said input means and said repeater for controlling the rate of change of said analog output pressure signal, said analog output pressure signal having a magnitude which is a function of the duration of energization of one of said solenoid valves;
- a first pneumatic restrictor interposed between said reservoir and said area of ambient pressure for controlling the rate of pressure decrease in said reservoir during those times when said second valve is energized;
- said apparatus thereby being operable by said digital system controller to positionably control said transducer;
- wherein said first restrictor is readily removable from said apparatus and is replaceable by a second restrictor having an orifice flow passage therethrough of a cross-sectional area different from that of the orifice flow passage of said first restrictor.
- 3. A pneumatic interface apparatus for the positioning control of at least one pneumatic transducer and comprising:
- a pneumatic flow control means having a first input valve, a second exhaust valve and a restrictor associated with each valve for controlling the number of moles of a gas confined within a substantially constant volume of gas;
- a volume relay having a first chamber connected to said control means and a second chamber connectable to said transducer, said chambers being isolated from each other by a diaphragm, the pressure in said second chamber being maintained by a pressure source and a check valve to be in a predetermined relationship to the pressure in said first chamber;
- said apparatus including a cover and a body disposed adjacent said cover, said cover and said body cooperating to define said substantially constant volume;
- said first valve and said second valve being disposed in said body;
- a first restrictor removably disposed in said apparatus to be in fluid flow communication between said substantially constant volume and a region of atmospheric pressure for controlling the rate of pressure decrease in said constant volume during those times when said second valve is energized.
- 4. The invention set forth in claim 3 wherein said first restrictor is readily removable from said apparatus and is replaceable by a second restrictor having an orifice flow passage therethrough of a cross-sectional area different from that of the orifice flow passage of said first restrictor.
