Claims
- 1. A method of building a pneumatic tire preform (10) comprising bead areas (12,13), sidewalls (16,17), tread region (20) and an inner liner (21) having a meridional width L upon a tire building drum (22), the method including applying the inner liner (21) of elastomeric material to the building drum (22) characterized by the steps of:
a) applying a first ply (24) of elastomeric material upon the building drum (22) whereby the first ply extends from one edge (27) of preform width L to a first predetermined position (28) upon the drum (22) beyond the midpoint (29) of preform width L; and b) applying a second ply (25) of elastomeric material upon the building drum (22) whereby the second ply extends from the opposite edge (30) of the preform width L to a second predetermined position upon the drum (22) beyond the midpoint (29) of preform width L and overlaps the first ply (24) of elastomeric material.
- 2. The method of building a tire preform (10) as set forth in claim 1 including the steps of:
a) applying the first ply (24) having a width less than preform width L but greater than one half preform width L upon the building drum (22) whereby one edge of the first ply (24) is radially aligned with edge (27) of the preform width L; b) providing the second ply (25) of elastomeric material; and c) applying the second ply (25) having a width less than preform width L but greater than one half preform width L upon the building drum (22) whereby one edge of the second ply (25) is radially aligned with the opposite edge (30) of the preform width L thereby overlapping the first ply (24).
- 3. The method of building a tire preform (10) as set forth in claim 2 including the step of providing the first and second plies (24,25) from a sheet of elastomeric material having a uniform thickness.
- 4. The method of building a pneumatic tire preform (40) comprising bead areas (42,43), sidewalls (46,47), tread region (50) and an inner liner having a preform width M upon a tire building drum (22), the method including of applying the inner liner to the building drum (22) characterized by the steps of:
a) applying a first ply (54) of elastomeric material having a width W, where the width W is less than preform width M upon the building drum (22) whereby one edge of the first ply (54) is radially aligned with one edge (57) of the preform width M; b) applying a second ply (55) of elastomeric material having a width Y equal to ply width W upon the building drum (22) whereby one edge of the second ply (55) is radially aligned with the opposite edge (59) of preform width M so that the second ply (55) does not abut against the first ply (54); c) applying a third ply (56) of elastomeric material having a width Z less than preform width M upon the building drum (22) to overlap the first and second plies (54,55).
- 5. The method of building a tire preform (40) as set forth in claim 4 further including the steps of:
a) applying the first ply (54) of elastomeric material having a width W less than 0.5 M.; and b) applying the second ply (55) of elastomeric material having a width Y less than 0.5 M.
- 6. The method of building a tire preform (40) as set forth in claim 5 including the step of providing the first, second, and third plies (54,55,56) of elastomeric material having a uniform thickness.
- 7. The method of building a tire preform (40) as set forth in claim 6 including the step of providing the first and second plies (54,55) of a first uniform thickness and the third ply (56) of a second uniform thickness greater than the first uniform thickness.
